ChatGPT 5 Not Showing Up? Here's Why and How to Fix It

Last Updated: August 2026

You open ChatGPT expecting to see GPT-5 in the model picker, but the option is nowhere to be found. You may see Instant, Thinking, or other choices instead, or you may not see the model selector you expected at all.

There is an important detail behind this problem: the original GPT-5 models are no longer selectable in ChatGPT as of 2026. OpenAI retired GPT-5 Instant and GPT-5 Thinking from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. GPT-5.1 models were retired later on March 11, 2026. Current ChatGPT model selection uses newer GPT-5-series models and simplified options depending on your plan and account.

That means the search phrase “ChatGPT 5 not showing up” can describe two different situations. You may be looking for the original GPT-5 model that has already been retired, or you may actually be trying to find a newer GPT-5-series option such as GPT-5.6.

This guide explains both situations and shows what to check.

Why Is ChatGPT 5 Not Showing Up?

The most likely reason depends on what you mean by GPT-5.

If you are specifically looking for the original GPT-5 or GPT-5 Thinking option, you will not find it in the current ChatGPT model picker because those models were retired from ChatGPT in February 2026.

If you are looking for a current GPT-5-series model, the issue can be different. Model availability depends on your ChatGPT plan, whether you are signed in, workspace settings, and whether a newer model is still being rolled out to your account.

For example, OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol is being gradually rolled out to eligible paid plans and may not immediately appear for every eligible account.

1. Check Which GPT-5 Model You Are Looking For

Start by identifying the exact model name you expect to see.

The original GPT-5 family included options such as:

  • GPT-5
  • GPT-5 Thinking
  • GPT-5 Pro

Those original ChatGPT models have been retired. OpenAI states that GPT-5 Instant and GPT-5 Thinking were retired on February 13, 2026.

So if an older article, YouTube video, screenshot, or tutorial tells you to select GPT-5 from the model picker, those instructions may now be outdated.

2. Check the Current Model Picker

Open ChatGPT and look at the model selector in the chat interface.

The current model picker has been simplified. Depending on your plan, you may see options such as:

  • Instant
  • Medium
  • High
  • Extra High
  • Pro

The exact choices depend on your plan. OpenAI’s current documentation says GPT-5.6 Sol powers the Medium and High reasoning options on eligible paid plans, while Pro uses GPT-5.6 Sol Pro.

This is important because you may be expecting to see the literal name GPT-5, while ChatGPT is now presenting the capability through a different model-selection interface.

3. Understand Why GPT-5 May Not Appear as a Separate Model

The ChatGPT model picker has changed from the interface that many older GPT-5 guides describe.

OpenAI updated the model picker in March 2026 to simplify model selection around speed and reasoning. Paid users can choose options such as Instant, Thinking, and Pro depending on their plan, with additional controls available through Configure.

Later updates further simplified the controls.

As a result, searching for a separate GPT-5 button may lead to confusion.

The absence of a button labeled GPT-5 does not necessarily mean that you have lost access to current GPT-5-series capabilities.

4. Check Your ChatGPT Plan

Your plan can determine which models and reasoning options appear.

OpenAI’s current GPT-5.6 availability information says:

  • Plus users can access Medium and High.
  • Pro users can access Medium, High, Extra High, and Pro.
  • Business users can access the available paid options.
  • Enterprise users can access the available paid options.
  • Free and Go users do not have access to GPT-5.6 Sol in standard ChatGPT conversations.

Therefore, two people can open ChatGPT and see different model choices even when they are using the same version of the website.

If you recently changed plans, make sure ChatGPT has recognized the correct subscription.

5. Make Sure You Are Signed Into the Correct Account

This is one of the simplest things to check.

If you have more than one OpenAI account, you may be signed into an account with a different subscription.

For example, you could have:

  • A personal Free account
  • A personal Plus account
  • A work account
  • A Business or Enterprise workspace

OpenAI specifically recommends confirming that you are signed into the correct account when a GPT-5.6 model is missing.

Check your account details and subscription before changing browser settings or reinstalling the application.

6. Check Your ChatGPT Workspace

Workspace accounts can have additional restrictions.

If you use ChatGPT through Business or Enterprise, an administrator may control which models are available to members.

If other members of your organization can see a model but you cannot, ask the workspace administrator to verify your model permissions.

This is especially important if the missing model is available to the organization but has not been enabled for your role.

7. Refresh ChatGPT

If the correct model should be available but the interface has not updated, refresh ChatGPT.

On Windows, press:

Ctrl + R

On Mac, press:

Command + R

You can also close the browser tab and open ChatGPT again.

A normal refresh can force the interface to retrieve the latest account and model information.

8. Sign Out and Sign Back In

If refreshing does not help, sign out of ChatGPT and sign back in.

This can be useful after:

  • Upgrading your plan
  • Changing accounts
  • Joining a workspace
  • Changing workspace permissions
  • Installing a browser update
  • Experiencing a temporary account synchronization problem

After signing back in, open a new chat and check the model picker again.

9. Check ChatGPT on Another Browser

A browser problem can sometimes affect how ChatGPT’s interface loads.

If you normally use Chrome, try Edge or another supported browser.

If the expected model appears in the second browser, the problem is likely related to your original browser rather than your ChatGPT account.

You can then troubleshoot the original browser instead of changing your ChatGPT subscription or account.

10. Try a Private or Incognito Window

A private browsing window is another useful test.

Open a private or incognito window and sign into ChatGPT.

Check the model picker.

If the model appears there but not in your normal browser session, cached data, cookies, or an extension may be interfering with the ChatGPT interface.

This test can quickly separate account problems from browser-profile problems.

11. Disable Browser Extensions Temporarily

Some browser extensions can interfere with websites.

This is particularly worth checking if ChatGPT’s interface looks incomplete or buttons are missing.

Temporarily disable extensions and reload ChatGPT.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Content blockers
  • Privacy extensions
  • Script blockers
  • User-interface customization extensions
  • Security extensions

If the model picker returns after disabling an extension, enable extensions individually to identify the cause.

12. Clear ChatGPT Site Data

If the interface remains outdated, clearing ChatGPT’s site data can help.

You do not necessarily need to clear your entire browser history.

Instead, remove the site data associated with ChatGPT, sign in again, and check the model picker.

This is useful when an old interface or stale account state appears to be cached by the browser.

13. Update the ChatGPT App

If you are troubleshooting the ChatGPT app alongside another feature problem, ChatGPT File Upload Not Working and ChatGPT Image Upload Not Working cover two other common app-specific issues.

If you use ChatGPT on Android, iPhone, Windows, or another supported application, check whether an update is available.

An outdated application may not display the latest model-selection interface.

After updating:

  1. Close ChatGPT.
  2. Reopen it.
  3. Sign in if necessary.
  4. Start a new chat.
  5. Check the model selector.

Do not assume that an old screenshot or tutorial reflects the current application interface.

14. Check Whether GPT-5.6 Is Still Rolling Out

If you are actually looking for GPT-5.6, the situation is different from the retired GPT-5 models.

OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol is being gradually rolled out to eligible paid ChatGPT plans. If an eligible user does not see GPT-5.6 Sol, it may simply not have reached that account yet.

That means repeatedly reinstalling ChatGPT may not solve the problem.

If your plan qualifies but the model has not appeared, give the rollout time and check the model picker again later.

15. Check Whether You Are Looking for GPT-5.6 Sol

The current GPT-5.6 model may not appear with the simple name GPT-5.

OpenAI currently describes GPT-5.6 Sol as a reasoning model for complex work such as coding, research, science, cybersecurity, computer use, and design.

On eligible plans, it powers the Medium and High reasoning options.

So if you search the model picker and do not see “GPT-5,” look for the current reasoning options instead.

16. Check the Configure Menu

The model picker may contain additional settings under Configure.

OpenAI’s current model-picker design allows users to control automatic switching and access additional reasoning settings through Configure.

If you only look at the first level of the model picker, you may miss settings that were previously displayed more prominently.

Check the available configuration options before assuming that a model has disappeared.

17. Check Your Usage Limits

Model availability is separate from other account features, so do not assume that a missing model means your entire ChatGPT account is malfunctioning. For another account-level troubleshooting example, see ChatGPT Memory Not Working.

A model can also become temporarily unavailable because of usage limits.

OpenAI explains that GPT-5.6 uses existing ChatGPT limits for automatic reasoning, manually selected reasoning, and Pro. If a reasoning limit is reached, ChatGPT may use an available fallback instead.

If the model was available earlier but is temporarily unavailable, check whether ChatGPT displays a usage-limit message or reset time.

You may need to wait until the allowance resets.

18. Do Not Rely on Old GPT-5 Tutorials

This is one of the biggest reasons people search for ChatGPT 5 not showing up.

GPT-5 was launched in ChatGPT in August 2025, and OpenAI originally described it as the default model for logged-in users, with paid users receiving model-picker controls for GPT-5 and GPT-5 Thinking.

That information was accurate at launch.

It is no longer an accurate description of the current ChatGPT model picker because those original GPT-5 models have since been retired.

If you are following an older tutorial, the instructions may be the problem.

19. Check Whether You Are Using ChatGPT or the API

ChatGPT and the OpenAI API do not necessarily expose the same model-selection options.

A model can be retired from normal ChatGPT conversations while having different availability in API products, depending on OpenAI’s current model lifecycle.

If you are trying to use GPT-5 programmatically rather than inside ChatGPT, do not use a ChatGPT model-picker tutorial as your guide.

For normal ChatGPT users, focus on the models and controls shown inside your ChatGPT account.

20. Check Whether Your Account Is Managed

If you use ChatGPT through a school, company, or other managed environment, your administrator may control model access.

A missing model on a managed account does not necessarily indicate a problem with ChatGPT itself.

Ask the administrator whether the model or reasoning option is enabled for your workspace.

21. Check for a Temporary ChatGPT Problem

If the correct model should be available but suddenly disappears, the issue could be temporary.

Before making major changes, check whether ChatGPT is experiencing a service problem.

If the model picker is missing entirely, other ChatGPT features are also failing, or the website is loading incorrectly, wait briefly and try again. You can also compare this with ChatGPT Voice Mode Not Working if other ChatGPT features are also behaving unexpectedly.

You can also check OpenAI’s official status information before troubleshooting your device.

22. Start a New Chat

Sometimes the model-selection behavior can be confusing when you continue an older conversation.

Open a new chat and check the model picker there.

This is particularly useful after a major model update or when an older conversation was originally created with a model that is no longer available.

OpenAI has retired several older models, and existing conversations can continue on corresponding current models rather than preserving the original model selection.

23. Restart Your Device

A full device restart is not usually the first thing I would try for a missing model, but it is worth doing if the ChatGPT application itself appears stuck.

Restarting can clear temporary application and network problems.

After the restart, open ChatGPT and check the model picker again.

If the same model is still missing, concentrate on account, plan, rollout, and model-availability issues rather than repeating the restart.

24. Contact OpenAI Support if Your Plan Should Include the Model

Before contacting support, it is worth checking other ChatGPT features that may be affected by account or application changes. If you are also managing older conversations, see How to Delete ChatGPT History.

If you have confirmed that:

  • You are using the correct account.
  • Your subscription qualifies.
  • Your workspace allows the model.
  • The model should already be available.
  • You have refreshed and restarted ChatGPT.
  • The model is still missing across multiple browsers or devices.

then contacting OpenAI Support is reasonable.

When contacting support, explain your plan, account type, device, ChatGPT version, and the exact model you expect to see.

Screenshots of the model picker can also help demonstrate the issue.

ChatGPT 5 Not Showing Up on Free

If you are using a Free account, do not assume that you should see every current GPT-5-series reasoning option.

OpenAI’s current GPT-5.6 documentation says GPT-5.6 Sol is not included in standard ChatGPT conversations for Free and Go plans.

This is different from the original GPT-5 launch, when OpenAI announced GPT-5 availability across ChatGPT tiers.

The important point is that model availability changes over time.

ChatGPT 5 Not Showing Up on Plus

If you have ChatGPT Plus and cannot find the current GPT-5.6 reasoning options, first confirm that you are signed into the correct account.

OpenAI currently lists Medium and High GPT-5.6 Sol access for Plus users.

If those options are missing, refresh ChatGPT, sign out and back in, test another browser, and check whether the rollout has reached your account.

ChatGPT 5 Not Showing Up on Pro

Pro users have access to additional reasoning options.

OpenAI currently lists Medium, High, Extra High, and Pro options for Pro users, with GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro powering the relevant choices.

If you have Pro but cannot see the expected option, verify the account and workspace first.

If the problem occurs across browsers and devices, contact OpenAI Support.

ChatGPT 5 Not Showing Up on Mobile

If the model does not appear in the ChatGPT Android or iPhone app:

  1. Update the ChatGPT app.
  2. Close and reopen it.
  3. Confirm you are signed into the correct account.
  4. Check your subscription.
  5. Start a new chat.
  6. Check the model picker.
  7. Try ChatGPT on the web.

Testing the web version is useful because it helps determine whether the issue is specific to the mobile app.

ChatGPT 5 Not Showing Up on the Web

For ChatGPT on the web, try this sequence:

  1. Refresh the page.
  2. Sign out and sign back in.
  3. Open a private browsing window.
  4. Try another browser.
  5. Disable browser extensions.
  6. Clear ChatGPT site data.
  7. Check your plan.
  8. Check the model picker and Configure menu.
  9. Check whether the model is still supported.

If the model appears in another browser, focus on the original browser.

What If GPT-5 Was There Before but Is Gone Now?

This is probably the most important distinction.

If you previously saw GPT-5 in ChatGPT and it has now disappeared, that can be completely normal.

OpenAI retired GPT-5 Instant and GPT-5 Thinking from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. GPT-5.1 models were also retired on March 11, 2026.

Therefore, an older screenshot showing GPT-5 in the model picker does not prove that GPT-5 should still be selectable today.

The current ChatGPT experience uses newer models and simplified reasoning controls.

What If I Want the Newest GPT-5 Model?

If your goal is simply to use the latest GPT-5-series capability, do not focus exclusively on finding a button labeled GPT-5.

Check the current model picker and look for the reasoning options available to your plan.

As of the current GPT-5.6 rollout, eligible paid users can see GPT-5.6-powered reasoning options such as Medium and High, while Pro users can also have Extra High and Pro.

The exact interface may continue to change as OpenAI updates model selection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is GPT-5 not showing up in ChatGPT?

If you mean the original GPT-5 model, it has been retired from ChatGPT. If you mean a newer GPT-5-series model, availability depends on your plan, account, workspace, and rollout status.

Why does GPT-5 not show up after I upgraded?

Confirm that you upgraded the correct ChatGPT account, then sign out and back in. If the expected model still does not appear, test another browser and check whether the model is still available under the current ChatGPT model picker.

Why did GPT-5 disappear from my old chats?

OpenAI can retire models from ChatGPT and move existing conversations to corresponding current models. The original GPT-5 models were retired in February 2026.

The Bottom Line

The phrase “ChatGPT 5 not showing up” can be misleading because the ChatGPT model lineup has changed since GPT-5 originally launched.

If you are looking for the original GPT-5 or GPT-5 Thinking option, you are not dealing with a broken model picker. Those models were retired from ChatGPT in February 2026.

If you are looking for a current GPT-5-series model, check your plan, account, workspace permissions, model picker, and rollout status. For GPT-5.6 specifically, OpenAI says the model is gradually rolling out to eligible paid plans, so some accounts may not see it immediately.

The safest approach is to use the model names and controls currently displayed in your ChatGPT account rather than relying on older GPT-5 tutorials or screenshots.
