Fix: iPhone Not Connecting to the Internet on Cellular Data

By EcollinsJuly 21, 2026No Comments16 Mins Read iPhone Tips
iPhone cellular data not working despite showing 5G signal

iPhone can show 4G, LTE, or 5G in the status bar and still fail to load websites or apps. The cause may be as simple as Cellular Data being disabled for one app, but it can also involve an expired data plan, carrier outage, incorrect SIM selection, roaming restriction, VPN, outdated carrier settings, or a network configuration fault.

Do not begin with a factory reset. Work through the checks below in order, testing the internet after each one. Most of these steps take less than a minute and do not delete personal data.

Quick fixes when iPhone cellular data is not working

  1. Turn Wi-Fi off and confirm that Cellular Data is enabled.
  2. Check the signal indicator for 4G, LTE, 5G, SOS, No Service, or Searching.
  3. Turn Airplane Mode on for at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
  4. Confirm that your mobile plan has active data and no account restriction.
  5. Make sure cellular access is enabled for the affected app.
  6. Restart the iPhone.
  7. Check for a carrier settings update and an iOS update.
  8. Disable a VPN or security app temporarily.
  9. Verify the correct SIM or eSIM is selected for data.
  10. Reset Network Settings only if the earlier fixes fail.

The words Cellular Data may appear as Mobile Data on some iPhones and in some regions. Both refer to the same setting.

Identify the type of cellular-data problem

The status bar and the number of affected apps provide useful clues.

What you see Likely area to check
SOS, No Service, or Searching Coverage, outage, SIM/eSIM, account, or carrier problem
4G, LTE, or 5G but nothing loads Data plan, VPN, APN, network settings, or carrier routing
Only one app will not connect Cellular permission for that app or an app-specific fault
Calls work but internet does not Data allowance, data provisioning, APN, or Cellular Data setting
Data works in one place but not another Local coverage, congestion, or building interference
Data stopped after travelling Data Roaming, travel plan, network selection, or carrier restriction
One SIM works but the other does not Dual-SIM line selection or line provisioning

Before changing settings, turn Wi-Fi off from Settings > Wi-Fi and open a simple website in Safari. This prevents the iPhone from quietly using a remembered Wi-Fi network while you test cellular service.

1. Make sure Cellular Data is turned on

Open Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Data and turn on Cellular Data.

If the switch was already on, turn it off, wait several seconds, and turn it back on. Then test Safari with Wi-Fi disabled.

On a Dual SIM or Dual eSIM iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data and select the line that has an active data plan. A line can remain available for calls while another line supplies mobile internet.

If the cellular settings are missing, greyed out, or show no plan, skip to the SIM and carrier sections below.

2. Check whether cellular data is disabled for one app

iOS lets you prevent individual apps from using mobile data. This commonly explains why Safari works but WhatsApp, YouTube, Maps, Mail, or another app says there is no internet.

Open Settings > Cellular and scroll to the app list. Tap Show All if necessary, then turn on the switch beside the affected app. When its switch is off, that app can connect only through Wi-Fi.

Also check whether the app itself is down or malfunctioning:

  • Try two unrelated apps and a website in Safari.
  • Close and reopen the affected app.
  • Update it in the App Store.
  • Check for an outage affecting that service.

If all other apps work through cellular data, resetting the iPhone’s entire network configuration is unlikely to be the best first fix.

3. Toggle Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds

Airplane Mode makes the iPhone disconnect from the cellular network and register again when it is turned off.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Turn on Airplane Mode.
  3. Wait at least 15 seconds.
  4. Turn Airplane Mode off.
  5. Wait for the carrier name and 4G, LTE, or 5G indicator to return.

Test the connection again. If the status remains SOS, No Service, or Searching, the problem is broader than an app’s internet access.

4. Check your data balance, plan, and carrier account

An iPhone cannot confirm that a prepaid bundle has expired, a postpaid line is suspended, or the carrier has blocked data provisioning. It may still display signal bars and allow some calls.

Use your carrier’s app, USSD service, website, or customer support to confirm:

  • The line is active.
  • A mobile-data plan or airtime balance is available.
  • The plan has not expired or reached its limit.
  • There is no billing or identity-verification restriction.
  • Data service is provisioned on the line.
  • The SIM or eSIM has not been replaced, barred, or deactivated.

Do not rely only on the iPhone’s data-usage counter. Settings > Cellular records usage since the statistics were last reset; it does not necessarily match the carrier’s billing cycle or remaining allowance.

5. Check for a carrier outage or weak coverage

Ask someone using the same carrier nearby whether their mobile data works. You can also check the carrier’s official status page, app, or customer-service channel.

Coverage can fail inside lifts, basements, concrete buildings, rural areas, and crowded venues. Move outdoors or near a window and test again. If the connection works elsewhere, changing iPhone settings will not correct a local coverage gap.

Congestion can produce full signal bars with very slow or unusable internet. Test again at another time or location before resetting the phone.

What SOS, No Service, and Searching mean

  • SOS: The iPhone is not connected to its normal carrier network, although emergency calling may be available through another supported network.
  • No Service: No usable cellular network is currently available to the line.
  • Searching: The iPhone is trying to find and register with a network.

If these indicators persist in a known coverage area, restart the phone, check the SIM or eSIM, install carrier updates, and contact the carrier to verify the account and local network.

6. Restart the iPhone

A restart refreshes iOS and the cellular modem’s software state.

For an iPhone with Face ID, hold the Side button and either volume button until the power-off slider appears. Drag the slider, wait about 30 seconds, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

For an iPhone with a Home button, hold the Side or Top button until the slider appears. Turn it off, wait, and hold the button again to start it.

If the screen is frozen, follow how to force restart an iPhone. A force restart does not erase data, but it is unnecessary when the normal power controls still work.

7. Update the carrier settings

Carrier settings contain network-specific configuration for calling and mobile data. Carriers can issue updates separately from iOS.

Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi, then:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap About.
  4. Wait on that screen for about 30 seconds.
  5. Tap Update if a carrier settings prompt appears.

No prompt generally means there is no pending carrier update. The installed version appears next to Carrier in the About screen.

A new physical SIM or eSIM may require fresh carrier settings. Check this step after switching carriers, replacing a SIM, or transferring a line to another iPhone.

8. Update iOS

An iOS update can correct modem, SIM, and networking bugs. Back up the iPhone first, connect to Wi-Fi and power, then open Settings > General > Software Update.

Install the latest compatible update and test cellular data afterward. If mobile data is your only internet connection, use a trusted Wi-Fi network or update through Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on Windows.

Avoid installing unknown configuration profiles or unofficial software as a cellular-data fix.

9. Turn off VPN and security software temporarily

A VPN routes internet traffic through another server. If its app, profile, server, or subscription fails, the iPhone may have a cellular signal but no usable internet.

Open the VPN app and disconnect it. Also check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management for a VPN or filtering profile. If the VPN reconnects automatically, disable its Connect On Demand or automatic-connect option temporarily.

Restart the iPhone and test cellular data. If removing or disabling the VPN fixes the connection, update the app or contact its provider before enabling it again.

Employer, school, parental-control, antivirus, firewall, DNS-filtering, and content-filter apps can cause similar symptoms. Do not remove an organization-managed profile without the administrator’s approval.

10. Check Dual SIM and eSIM settings

On a Dual SIM iPhone, open Settings > Cellular and confirm that:

  • Both expected plans appear.
  • The required line is turned on.
  • Cellular Data points to the line with the active bundle.
  • The carrier name appears for that line.
  • Allow Cellular Data Switching is set according to your needs.

Allow Cellular Data Switching can let the iPhone use the other line’s data in certain call situations. Leaving it off gives more predictable control over which plan is charged.

If an eSIM plan has disappeared, do not delete another eSIM or scan random QR codes. Contact the carrier that issued the plan. Removing an eSIM can require carrier assistance and a new activation code to reinstall it.

11. Inspect or reseat a physical SIM

If the iPhone uses a physical SIM and displays Invalid SIM, No SIM, SOS, or No Service:

  1. Turn the iPhone off.
  2. Remove the SIM tray with the proper eject tool.
  3. Check that the SIM is clean, dry, undamaged, and the correct size.
  4. Place it flat in the tray in the correct orientation.
  5. Reinsert the tray fully and restart the iPhone.

Do not use a tray from a different iPhone model. A bent tray, cut SIM, corrosion, or poorly fitting adapter can cause unreliable contact.

Where practical, the carrier can test the line with another SIM or issue a replacement. A physical SIM working in another compatible phone helps narrow the problem, but it does not rule out an account or provisioning fault.

12. Turn on Data Roaming when travelling

If cellular data stopped after crossing a border or leaving the carrier’s home network, open:

Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Roaming

On Dual SIM, first select the line you are using. Turn Data Roaming on only if your carrier or travel plan requires it.

Roaming can incur substantial charges. Confirm coverage, rates, fair-use limits, and partner networks with the carrier before enabling it. If the setting is already on, toggle Airplane Mode, restart the iPhone, and try manually or automatically selecting a supported partner network if the carrier instructs you to do so.

13. Check Low Data Mode and data-heavy apps

Low Data Mode reduces background network activity. It does not normally block all cellular internet, but it can pause automatic downloads, backups, updates, and background refresh.

Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Mode. Select Standard temporarily and test the affected task.

If ordinary websites work but large downloads, cloud backups, or high-quality streaming do not, check:

  • The app’s own mobile-data settings.
  • App Store download restrictions.
  • iCloud backup requirements.
  • Video-quality and data-saver options.
  • Carrier plan restrictions on tethering or streaming.

14. Check the APN only when your carrier requires it

The Access Point Name, or APN, tells the iPhone how to connect to the carrier’s data service. Many carriers configure it automatically, and some do not allow customers to edit it.

If your carrier explicitly supplies APN values, the menu may appear under Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Network. Enter only the exact values provided by the carrier. Do not copy APN settings from an old blog post, another network, or a different country.

Incorrect APN details can disable mobile data and may affect MMS or Personal Hotspot. To revert editable APN settings, open Cellular Data Network and tap Reset Settings, if that option is available.

If the APN menu is absent, contact the carrier. A configuration profile or carrier update may control the settings.

15. Reset Network Settings

Use this after testing the less disruptive fixes. It can clear corrupted cellular, Wi-Fi, VPN, and related network configuration.

Go to:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings

Enter the passcode and confirm. The iPhone will restart.

This reset does not erase photos, apps, messages, or other personal content. However, it removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular preferences, and many VPN or APN settings. Have your Wi-Fi passwords and any carrier-supplied configuration available before proceeding.

Our detailed how to reset network settings on iPhone article explains what is removed, what remains, and the steps to reconnect afterward.

After the reset, allow the iPhone to register with the network, confirm Cellular Data is on, and test Safari before reinstalling VPN or security configurations.

What if calls work but cellular internet does not?

Voice and data services can be provisioned separately. If calls and SMS work but every app loses internet when Wi-Fi is off:

  1. Confirm an active data bundle with the carrier.
  2. Check that Cellular Data is on.
  3. Test Safari and more than one app.
  4. Verify the selected data line on Dual SIM.
  5. Install carrier settings updates.
  6. Disable VPN and filtering software.
  7. Ask the carrier to check data provisioning and APN requirements.
  8. Reset Network Settings if the carrier finds no account problem.

This pattern is less likely to be caused by a damaged antenna if calls remain stable, but only proper diagnostics can rule out hardware.

What if 5G appears but there is no internet?

The 5G icon shows a network connection, not a guarantee that data is flowing normally. Congestion, a carrier routing fault, plan restrictions, or weak usable signal can still interrupt internet access.

Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data and select LTE temporarily, where available. If LTE works consistently while 5G does not, report the location and time to the carrier. Return the setting to 5G Auto after testing unless the carrier recommends otherwise.

Do not treat switching to LTE as a permanent repair for a damaged phone. It is a diagnostic step and a practical workaround for local 5G problems.

When to contact the carrier

Contact your mobile network when:

  • Your plan, balance, or account status is uncertain.
  • Other customers nearby also have no service.
  • The iPhone shows SOS, No Service, Searching, Invalid SIM, or No SIM.
  • An eSIM plan is missing or cannot activate.
  • Calls work but data provisioning appears inactive.
  • You need the correct APN or roaming partner settings.
  • The SIM needs replacement.
  • The connection fails only in particular locations.

Ask the carrier to confirm that the account is active, the device is not blocked, the SIM/eSIM is correctly provisioned, mobile data is enabled on the line, and there is no outage.

When the iPhone may need service

Arrange hardware diagnostics if the carrier confirms that the line and network are working but the iPhone still cannot connect, especially when:

  • A known-working SIM fails in this iPhone but works in another compatible phone.
  • Multiple carriers fail on an unlocked iPhone.
  • Cellular service disappeared after a drop, bend, liquid exposure, or repair.
  • The modem firmware or IMEI information is missing from Settings > General > About.
  • The cellular settings are consistently greyed out.
  • The phone overheats, restarts, or loses signal whenever cellular data is used.

Back up the iPhone before service. Do not factory-reset it solely because mobile data is unavailable unless Apple or the carrier has ruled out the account, SIM, coverage, settings, and hardware possibilities.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my iPhone not connecting to the internet with cellular data on?

The data plan may be exhausted, the network may be down, the wrong SIM may be selected, an app may lack cellular permission, or a VPN or network setting may be blocking traffic. Test Safari with Wi-Fi off and work through the fixes in order.

Why does my iPhone show LTE or 5G but no internet?

The icon confirms registration with a cellular network, but it does not confirm a working data route. Check the plan, outage status, VPN, APN, and carrier provisioning. Toggle Airplane Mode and test LTE if 5G is unreliable.

Why does cellular data work for some apps but not others?

Cellular access may be disabled for the affected app. Open Settings > Cellular, find the app, and turn its switch on. Also check the app’s server status and internal data-saving settings.

Will Reset Network Settings delete my photos?

No. It does not erase photos, apps, messages, or accounts. It does remove saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular preferences, and many VPN and APN settings.

Should Data Roaming be on?

Usually only when you are using a carrier or travel plan outside its home network and the provider instructs you to enable it. Confirm charges before turning it on.

Can an old SIM make mobile data stop working?

Yes. A worn, damaged, incorrectly provisioned, or outdated SIM can lose reliable network access. Ask the carrier to test or replace it. eSIM users should have the carrier verify activation rather than deleting the plan without a replacement method.

Why does my internet work on Wi-Fi but not mobile data?

That isolates the problem to the cellular connection rather than the whole iPhone. Check Cellular Data, the app switches, plan balance, signal, SIM/eSIM, carrier settings, VPN, and account provisioning.

Should I factory-reset my iPhone?

Not as an early troubleshooting step. A factory reset erases personal content and often cannot fix carrier outages, expired plans, SIM faults, or hardware damage. Use Reset Network Settings first after completing the other checks.

The best order for restoring cellular internet

Confirm Cellular Data and the app’s permission, toggle Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds, check the data plan and carrier network, then restart the iPhone. Update the carrier settings and iOS, disable VPN software, and verify the correct SIM or roaming options. Use Reset Network Settings only after those targeted checks fail, and contact the carrier before considering a factory reset or repair.
