If your iPhone is not receiving verification texts, first confirm that the company has the correct phone number, stop requesting new codes for a few minutes, and check whether ordinary SMS messages reach your iPhone. Then turn Airplane Mode on and off, restart the iPhone, search the Messages app for the sender, and inspect filtered or blocked messages.

Most one-time passwords and two-factor authentication codes are sent as SMS through your mobile carrier. They do not necessarily use iMessage, and a working Wi-Fi connection does not prove that SMS delivery is working. If normal texts arrive but verification codes do not, the sender, a short-code block, spam filter, recent number transfer, or carrier account setting is more likely responsible.

Use the checks below in order. Avoid repeatedly requesting codes because many services temporarily pause delivery or invalidate every earlier code when a new one is generated.

Identify Which Verification Texts Are Missing

Before changing iPhone settings, determine the scope of the problem.

Only One Company’s Codes Are Missing

If codes from your bank, social network, email provider or another single service are missing while other verification texts arrive, the iPhone is probably capable of receiving SMS. The company may:

  • Have the wrong phone number
  • Be experiencing a delivery delay
  • Have temporarily rate-limited your requests
  • Use a sender your carrier blocks
  • Not support the number type or country
  • Have marked the number as recently changed

Contact that company or use its voice-call, email, authenticator-app or backup-code option.

No Verification Codes Arrive from Any Company

If every one-time code fails but personal SMS messages arrive, suspect:

  • Carrier short-code blocking
  • Spam filtering
  • A message-filtering app
  • A recently ported number
  • A SIM or eSIM provisioning problem
  • Too many code requests

No SMS Messages Arrive

Ask someone to send a plain text message from a non-iPhone or with iMessage turned off. If that message also fails, troubleshoot the cellular line, carrier account, SIM and network settings.

Codes Arrive Late

Delayed codes commonly result from weak cellular service, carrier congestion, sender delays or repeated requests. The newest code usually replaces older codes. Use only the latest message and request another code only after the service’s waiting period.

1. Confirm the Phone Number

On the website or app requesting verification, check the number carefully:

  • Correct country
  • Correct country calling code
  • Correct area or mobile prefix
  • No missing or duplicated digit
  • Current number rather than an old number
  • Correct SIM number on a dual-SIM iPhone

Some forms expect the country code separately and do not want a local leading zero. Others display only the final few digits. Compare those visible digits with the number on the iPhone.

If you recently changed numbers, update the account through its official security settings. Do not ask a stranger or previous owner of the number to forward a code.

2. Stop Requesting Codes Repeatedly

Requesting many verification texts within a short period can trigger anti-abuse limits.

When this happens:

  • The sender may delay new codes.
  • Earlier codes may expire immediately.
  • The account may temporarily block verification attempts.
  • Messages may arrive out of order.

Wait for the countdown shown by the service. If no countdown appears, wait several minutes before trying again. Use the most recent code only.

Do not keep switching between SMS and voice calls every few seconds. That can extend the delay on some services.

3. Check the Cellular Signal

SMS normally requires the iPhone to register with the cellular network. Look at the status bar for:

  • Normal signal bars
  • SOS or SOS Only
  • No Service
  • Searching
  • Airplane Mode

If the iPhone shows SOS Only or No Service:

  1. Move to an area with better coverage.
  2. Turn Airplane Mode on for about 15 seconds.
  3. Turn it off.
  4. Wait for the carrier name and signal to return.
  5. Request one new code.

Apple explains that SMS requires a cellular network connection, while iMessage, RCS and MMS use cellular data or Wi-Fi. Apple also recommends restarting the device, checking the network connection and confirming SMS support with the carrier when messages cannot be received. Apple Support

4. Test an Ordinary SMS Message

This is one of the most useful diagnostic steps.

Ask someone to send a normal SMS to your phone number. If possible, use:

  • An Android phone
  • A basic phone
  • An iPhone with iMessage temporarily turned off

Then compare the result:

Test result Likely direction
Ordinary SMS arrives, one company’s code does not Sender or account problem
Ordinary SMS arrives, all short codes fail Carrier short-code block or spam filtering
iMessage arrives, SMS does not Cellular line, carrier, SIM or provisioning issue
No messages arrive at all Broader Messages, number or network problem
Codes arrive on another phone using the same SIM iPhone setting or software issue

An iMessage from another Apple user can arrive through Wi-Fi, so it is not a reliable test of carrier SMS.

5. Turn Airplane Mode On and Off

Airplane Mode forces the iPhone to disconnect from and re-register with the mobile network.

  1. Open Control Center.
  2. Tap the airplane icon.
  3. Wait about 15 seconds.
  4. Turn Airplane Mode off.
  5. Wait for the cellular signal to return.
  6. Request one verification code.

If the signal does not return, restart the iPhone and check that the correct cellular line is enabled.

6. Restart the iPhone

A restart can clear a temporary problem in Messages, the cellular modem or the carrier connection.

iPhone with Face ID

  1. Hold either volume button and the Side button.
  2. Drag the power-off slider.
  3. Wait about 30 seconds.
  4. Hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

iPhone with a Home Button

  1. Hold the Side or Top button.
  2. Drag the power-off slider.
  3. Wait for the phone to turn off.
  4. Hold the Side or Top button until the Apple logo appears.

After the restart, wait for the network signal before requesting another code.

7. Force Restart the iPhone

Use a force restart when the Messages app or iPhone is unresponsive or a normal restart did not clear the network problem. It does not erase personal data.

For iPhone 8, iPhone SE 2nd generation or later, iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 models:

  1. Press and quickly release Volume Up.
  2. Press and quickly release Volume Down.
  3. Hold the Side button.
  4. Release it when the Apple logo appears.

For iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, hold Volume Down and the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

For iPhone 6s, first-generation iPhone SE and earlier, hold the Home button and Side or Top button until the Apple logo appears.

See how to force restart an iPhone for the full model-specific instructions.

8. Search the Messages App

The verification text may have arrived without a notification or may be buried among conversations.

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Pull down to reveal Search.
  3. Search for:
  • The company name
  • “Code”
  • “Verification”
  • “OTP”
  • “Security”
  • The sender number
  1. Open any matching conversation.

Also inspect recently deleted conversations if you may have removed it accidentally:

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Tap Edit or Filters.
  3. Open Recently Deleted.

Recover only messages you recognize. Verification codes are designed to expire, so an old recovered code may no longer work.

9. Check Unknown Senders and Spam

Message filtering can move texts away from the main conversation list.

In Messages:

  1. Tap Filters in the upper-left corner.
  2. Open Unknown Senders.
  3. Check other available categories such as Transactions, Promotions or Junk.

On current iOS versions, filtering options can vary by region, carrier and installed apps.

To review the main filter setting:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps > Messages.
  3. Find the message-filtering section.
  4. Review Filter Unknown Senders and any selected filtering extension.

Temporarily turn off filtering and request one new code. If it arrives, configure or remove the filter that classified it incorrectly.

Filtering generally changes where a message appears and whether it triggers a notification. It does not always mean the carrier failed to deliver the SMS.

10. Review Blocked Contacts

A sender or number range may have been blocked accidentally.

Open:

Settings > Apps > Messages > Blocked Contacts

On some iOS versions, use:

Settings > Messages > Blocked Contacts

Review the list carefully. Remove only entries you recognize as safe.

Verification messages often use short codes or rotating sender numbers, so the exact sender may not look like a normal phone number. If only one company’s codes fail, ask it what sender name or short code it uses.

11. Disable Third-Party Message Filters Temporarily

Carrier security apps, spam blockers and message-filtering extensions can classify automated codes as junk.

Check:

  • Settings > Apps > Messages
  • The filter selected under message filtering
  • Installed carrier-security apps
  • Call and message blocking apps
  • Work or school security profiles

Disable a personal filtering extension temporarily, restart the iPhone and request one code.

Do not remove an employer or school security profile without permission. If the iPhone is managed, ask the administrator whether automated SMS or unknown senders are restricted.

12. Check Focus Mode and Notifications

Focus and Do Not Disturb normally silence notifications rather than preventing delivery. A verification text may already be in Messages even though the iPhone made no sound.

Open Control Center and turn off the active Focus temporarily. Then check:

Settings > Notifications > Messages

Make sure:

  • Allow Notifications is enabled.
  • Lock Screen, Notification Center or Banners are selected as preferred.
  • Sounds are enabled if you need an audible alert.

Notification settings do not repair failed SMS delivery, but they can explain why codes appear unnoticed.

13. Confirm the Correct SIM or eSIM Is Active

On a dual-SIM iPhone, the account may be sending codes to a different line from the one currently active.

  1. Open Settings > Cellular or Mobile Service.
  2. Review both lines.
  3. Confirm that the number receiving the code is turned on.
  4. Check that the line shows a carrier and signal.
  5. Make sure the plan has not expired or been suspended.

Receiving SMS does not depend on which line is selected for cellular data, but the destination line must be active and registered.

If a SIM or eSIM was recently moved to a new iPhone, the carrier may still need to finish activation.

14. Check Your Number in iPhone Settings

Open:

Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive

Confirm that the expected phone number appears. Also check:

Settings > Phone > My Number

The displayed number is not always authoritative, especially after porting or changing a SIM, but a missing or incorrect number is useful information for the carrier.

Do not manually change carrier configuration or eSIM identifiers based on unofficial instructions.

15. Turn iMessage Off and On Only When Relevant

Most verification codes are SMS, so toggling iMessage is not an automatic fix. Consider it when:

  • Other iPhone users’ messages are also missing.
  • Your phone number is not selected under Send & Receive.
  • The problem began after moving from another Apple device.
  • Messages are going to an email address instead of the phone number.

To refresh iMessage:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Messages.
  2. Turn iMessage off.
  3. Restart the iPhone.
  4. Return to Messages settings.
  5. Turn iMessage on.
  6. Open Send & Receive and confirm the phone number.

Activation can take time and may involve an SMS charge from the carrier. If ordinary carrier SMS is already failing, fix the cellular line first.

16. Update Carrier Settings

Carrier settings control how the iPhone connects to the mobile network and uses services such as calling, messaging and mobile data.

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi or cellular data.
  2. Open Settings > General > About.
  3. Stay on the About screen for about 30 seconds.
  4. If a carrier settings update appears, choose Update.
  5. Restart the iPhone.

After installing a new SIM or eSIM, open the About screen again.

If the carrier name or network remains missing, contact the mobile provider.

17. Update iOS

Install the latest stable iOS update available for the iPhone:

  1. Open Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Back up important data.
  3. Download and install the update.
  4. Keep the iPhone connected to power.

An update can fix problems in Messages, dual-SIM handling and carrier connectivity.

If Wi-Fi is unavailable, update through Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on Windows using a data-capable cable.

18. Check Date and Time

An incorrect date or time can make a valid verification code appear expired or interfere with an app’s authentication session.

  1. Open Settings > General > Date & Time.
  2. Enable Set Automatically.
  3. Confirm the displayed time zone.
  4. Reopen the app or website requesting the code.

If Set Automatically is unavailable, Screen Time or device-management restrictions may control it.

The SMS can still arrive with an incorrect clock, but the service may reject the code during submission.

19. Reset Network Settings

Use a network reset when ordinary SMS is unreliable, the cellular line repeatedly disconnects or the problem began after changing a SIM, carrier or iOS version.

Before resetting, save important Wi-Fi passwords and VPN details.

Then:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  4. Tap Reset.
  5. Choose Reset Network Settings.
  6. Enter the passcode.
  7. Confirm.

This removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and resets cellular, VPN, APN and related network settings. It does not intentionally delete photos, messages, contacts or apps.

Read how to reset network settings on iPhone before proceeding so you know what must be reconfigured afterward.

Apple’s iPhone User Guide confirms that this reset removes network settings and returns them to their defaults without erasing personal content. Apple iPhone User Guide

After the restart, wait for the carrier signal, then request one new verification code.

20. Ask the Carrier About Short-Code Blocking

When normal person-to-person SMS works but automated verification texts do not, contact the mobile carrier and ask it to check:

  • Short-code SMS blocking
  • Premium-message blocking
  • Spam or fraud filtering
  • Account-level messaging restrictions
  • SIM or eSIM provisioning
  • Recent number-port status
  • SMS routing
  • Whether incoming application-to-person messages are supported

Explain that ordinary SMS works but one-time-password and verification messages do not. This distinction helps the carrier investigate the correct routing.

Do not ask the carrier to disable every fraud protection permanently. It may be able to allow legitimate application-to-person messages while retaining broader protection.

21. Check a Recently Ported Number

Moving a phone number between carriers can temporarily affect automated messages even after calls and personal texts begin working.

Verification companies may still route messages using outdated carrier information. The new carrier may also have incomplete SMS provisioning.

If the number was recently ported:

  1. Tell the new carrier that application-to-person verification SMS is failing.
  2. Ask whether the port is fully complete.
  3. Ask the sending company to refresh the number or carrier record.
  4. Avoid deleting the eSIM unless the carrier instructs you to.

If calls are also failing, why your phone is not receiving calls can help separate a full line problem from an SMS-only issue.

22. Contact the Company Sending the Code

Contact the sender when:

  • Only its codes are missing.
  • The displayed phone number is correct.
  • Other verification texts arrive.
  • The carrier confirms that short codes are allowed.
  • The service says too many codes were requested.

Ask the company to check:

  • Whether your account is rate-limited
  • Whether the phone number is supported
  • Whether the number is marked as VoIP
  • Whether its SMS provider reports delivery
  • Whether another verification method is available

Use only the company’s official website, app or support contact. Do not search social media for a stranger claiming to “activate” verification messages.

23. Use Another Verification Method

If the service offers alternatives, use:

  • Voice call
  • Authenticator app
  • Email
  • Push notification
  • Security key
  • Previously saved backup code
  • Trusted device approval

An authenticator app is often more reliable than SMS because it can generate codes without waiting for carrier delivery. Set it up only from the account’s official security settings after regaining access.

Store backup codes securely. Do not keep the only copy on the same phone you may lose access to.

iPhone 16 Not Receiving Verification Code Texts

The troubleshooting is the same for iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max:

  1. Confirm the number.
  2. Test ordinary SMS.
  3. Refresh Airplane Mode.
  4. Force restart using Volume Up, Volume Down and the Side button.
  5. Check Filters and blocked contacts.
  6. Verify the active SIM or eSIM.
  7. Install carrier settings and iOS updates.
  8. Ask the carrier about short-code blocking.

If the problem began immediately after transferring from an older iPhone, confirm that the eSIM activation completed and the old device no longer holds the active line.

iPhone 17 Not Receiving Verification Code Texts

Use the same process for iPhone 17 models. Verification-code delivery depends mainly on the phone number, carrier SMS routing, active SIM or eSIM and sender, not the camera, processor or display model.

After setting up a new iPhone 17:

  • Confirm the correct line appears under Cellular.
  • Test an ordinary SMS from a non-iPhone.
  • Check whether the old iPhone still has service.
  • Open Settings > General > About for a carrier update.
  • Restart after eSIM activation.
  • Contact the carrier if personal SMS or calls also fail.

Do not erase the new iPhone before the carrier checks activation and SMS provisioning.

Codes Arrive After They Have Expired

If verification texts arrive late:

  • Stop requesting several codes.
  • Move to a stronger-signal area.
  • Restart the iPhone.
  • Use only the newest code.
  • Check automatic date and time.
  • Ask the carrier about SMS delays.
  • Try the sender’s voice-call or authenticator option.

Record approximately how long delivery takes and whether personal SMS is also delayed. That information helps distinguish carrier congestion from one sender’s delivery system.

Verification Texts Work on Wi-Fi but Not Cellular

Standard SMS normally uses the carrier network, not ordinary internet access. If texts arrive only while Wi-Fi Calling is active, the local cellular signal may be weak or the line may not register normally.

Turn Wi-Fi off and check:

  • Signal bars
  • SOS Only
  • Ability to make a call
  • Ability to receive an SMS

If the iPhone also cannot use cellular internet, follow iPhone not connecting to the internet using cellular data for the broader cellular checks.

Keep Verification Codes Private

A verification code proves that you control the phone number or account. Never share it with:

  • Someone claiming to be bank support
  • A marketplace buyer or seller
  • A caller claiming to reverse fraud
  • A social media “account recovery expert”
  • Someone who says the code was sent accidentally
  • Anyone asking you to read the code aloud

Legitimate support agents should not need your one-time password to “fix” SMS delivery. Enter codes only in the official app or website where you initiated the request.

If you receive a code you did not request, do not use or share it. Change the account password and review its security activity if you suspect someone is attempting to sign in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my iPhone not receiving verification texts?

The phone number may be wrong, the cellular line may lack service, Messages may filter the sender, the carrier may block short codes, or the sender may have delayed or rate-limited the request.

Why do regular texts arrive but verification codes do not?

Automated verification messages may use short codes or application-to-person routes that differ from personal SMS. Ask the carrier about short-code and spam blocking, then contact the company sending the code.

Does an iPhone need mobile data to receive an SMS code?

Standard SMS requires cellular network service but not a mobile-data allowance. iMessage, RCS and MMS have different connection requirements. Wi-Fi Calling may support SMS over Wi-Fi when the carrier provides it.

Can Do Not Disturb block verification texts?

Focus and Do Not Disturb normally silence notifications rather than stop message delivery. Open Messages and check Unknown Senders or other filters.

Why are verification codes arriving late?

Weak signal, carrier congestion, sender delays, number porting and repeated requests can delay codes. Wait before requesting another and use only the newest code.

Should I turn off iMessage?

Not as the first fix. Most verification codes use SMS. Toggle iMessage only when your phone number is missing from Send & Receive or other Apple messages are also affected.

Will resetting network settings delete my messages?

No. It does not intentionally erase messages, photos or apps. It removes saved Wi-Fi networks and resets cellular, VPN, APN and related network configuration.

Why does my bank’s verification code not arrive?

Confirm the bank has the correct number, check filtered messages, wait after repeated requests, and ask both the bank and carrier whether the bank’s short code is blocked. Never give a bank verification code to another person.

Can a blocked number prevent verification texts?

Yes, if the sender number or short code is blocked. Review Blocked Contacts and remove only a sender you recognize as legitimate.

Why did verification texts stop after changing carriers?

The number port or SMS provisioning may be incomplete, and some senders may still use outdated routing information. Contact the new carrier and the verification service.

Should I factory-reset my iPhone?

Not for a verification-code problem until the carrier and sender have checked their systems. A factory reset cannot repair short-code blocking, sender rate limits or incomplete number porting.

The fastest diagnosis is to test one ordinary SMS and one verification code from a different service. Those two results reveal whether to focus on the iPhone and cellular line, the carrier’s short-code routing, or the individual company sending the code.
