NVIDIA Filters Not Working? How to Fix It

When the message says “A supported game is required to use this feature,” the game may not support Freestyle, the NVIDIA app may not recognise the running game, or the game developer may have restricted the filters. Updating or reinstalling drivers will not make an unsupported or intentionally restricted game accept every filter.

ARC Raiders is a particularly important example. Embark changed how NVIDIA Freestyle works in the game to prevent players from enabling all filters simultaneously. If only certain filter combinations are unavailable in ARC Raiders, the behaviour may be intentional rather than a fault with your graphics card or NVIDIA app.

This article explains how to identify the type of problem, restore missing NVIDIA Game Filters where possible and avoid unsafe “fixes” that could conflict with a game’s anti-cheat system.

What Are NVIDIA Game Filters?

NVIDIA Game Filters are part of NVIDIA Freestyle. They apply real-time visual adjustments to a supported game through the NVIDIA in-game overlay.

Depending on the game, graphics card, driver and NVIDIA app version, filters can adjust:

• Brightness and contrast
• Colour and saturation
• Sharpness and clarity
• High dynamic range effects
• Details and shadows
• Depth of field
• Colour-blind accessibility
• RTX Dynamic Vibrance
• RTX HDR

The normal shortcut for opening NVIDIA Game Filters is:

Alt + F3

You can also press Alt + Z to open NVIDIA Overlay and select Game Filter when the option is available.

NVIDIA states that Freestyle is integrated at the driver level and works only with supported games. Support for one NVIDIA feature does not automatically mean that every filter will be available in that game.

Why NVIDIA Filters Are Not Working

The most common causes include:

• NVIDIA Overlay is turned off.
• The game does not support NVIDIA Freestyle.
• The developer has restricted some filters.
• The NVIDIA app does not recognise the game.
• The NVIDIA app is outdated.
• The graphics driver is outdated or damaged.
• The game changed after an update.
• An anti-cheat system blocks unsupported visual tools.
• Another overlay or capture program conflicts with NVIDIA Overlay.
• The Alt + F3 shortcut was changed.
• Windows 11 N is missing the Media Feature Pack.
• NVIDIA app components cannot access required Windows folders.
• A laptop is running the game on integrated graphics.

Determining whether the problem affects one game or every game is the fastest way to narrow it down.

NVIDIA Filters Not Working in ARC Raiders

ARC Raiders deserves separate attention because its filters may not behave like they do in another supported game.

Embark’s official ARC Raiders update 1.17.0 patch notes state that the developer prevented players from enabling all NVIDIA Freestyle filters simultaneously to remove an unfair visual advantage.

This does not necessarily mean every NVIDIA filter is permanently broken. It means the game can limit the combinations that players are allowed to enable.

If NVIDIA filters are not working in ARC Raiders:

1. Install the latest ARC Raiders update.
2. Update the NVIDIA app and graphics driver.
3. Confirm that NVIDIA Overlay is enabled.
4. Launch ARC Raiders normally through its supported game launcher.
5. Press Alt + F3.
6. Check whether individual approved filters remain available.
7. Remove an existing filter stack and test one filter at a time.
8. Use the game’s own display and accessibility settings when a Freestyle option is restricted.

Do not use NVIDIA Profile Inspector, DLL injection, unofficial overlay modifications or anti-cheat bypass instructions to force a disabled filter into ARC Raiders. Embark’s support information identifies certain hardware-modification and profile tools as potential system-integrity violations. A filter is not worth risking an error, account restriction or unstable game installation.

If one filter works but a previously stacked combination does not, reinstalling the NVIDIA driver is unlikely to remove a restriction imposed by the game.

Test NVIDIA Filters in Another Supported Game

Before changing your system, determine whether the issue is specific to ARC Raiders or affects NVIDIA Freestyle everywhere.

1. Close ARC Raiders.
2. Start another game known to support NVIDIA Game Filters.
3. Wait until the game reaches its main menu or active gameplay.
4. Press Alt + F3.
5. Try adding a simple filter.

If filters work in the second game, NVIDIA Overlay and the driver are probably functioning. The original game may be unsupported, temporarily incompatible or intentionally restricting filters.

If filters fail in every supported game, focus on the NVIDIA app, overlay and graphics driver.

Use NVIDIA’s official supported-games page when checking compatibility. A game appearing in NVIDIA app does not always prove that it supports Freestyle. NVIDIA app can detect games for optimisation, drivers or other features without providing Game Filters for each title.

Check Whether the Game Supports NVIDIA Freestyle

The error “A supported game is required to use this feature” often means exactly what it says.

NVIDIA’s official explanation of the supported-game error says that Freestyle works with supported titles and that this message usually appears when the current game is not supported.

Before troubleshooting:

1. Check NVIDIA’s supported-games list.
2. Find the exact game title.
3. Check whether the listed features include filters or Photo Mode.
4. Confirm that you are using a supported PC version.
5. Look for recent game patch notes that may have changed filter support.

Support can vary between:

• Native PC and cloud versions
• Steam, Epic Games and other releases
• DirectX and Vulkan modes
• Standard and test-server clients
• Older and current game builds

Do not assume an old video proves that filters still work. A developer or anti-cheat update can change support later.

Enable NVIDIA Overlay

Game Filters depend on NVIDIA Overlay. Alt + F3 cannot open Freestyle when the master overlay is disabled.

1. Open NVIDIA app.
2. Select Settings.
3. Find NVIDIA Overlay or In-Game Overlay.
4. Turn it on.
5. Close and reopen the game.
6. Press Alt + Z to test the overlay.
7. Press Alt + F3 to test Game Filters.

When the overlay opens but Game Filter is missing, continue with the compatibility, app-version and driver checks below.

Check the NVIDIA Game Filter Shortcut

The default Game Filter shortcut is normally:

Alt + F3

Another program, laptop function-key setting or customised NVIDIA shortcut can prevent it from working.

1. Press Alt + Z.
2. Select the Settings gear.
3. Open Shortcuts.
4. Find Game Filter.
5. Confirm its assigned keys.
6. Change the shortcut if another app uses the same combination.

On a laptop, you may need to press:

Alt + Fn + F3

This depends on whether the top row is configured for standard function keys or hardware controls.

Restart the Game and NVIDIA App

NVIDIA Overlay attaches to a game while it starts. If the app or game updated while already open, the filter component may not load correctly.

1. Save your progress and exit the game.
2. Close its launcher if necessary.
3. Close NVIDIA app from its window and notification-area icon.
4. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
5. End the NVIDIA app user interface only if it remains stuck.
6. Reopen NVIDIA app.
7. Confirm Overlay is enabled.
8. Launch the game again.

Avoid ending every NVIDIA service and process. NVIDIA Display Container and other components support functions beyond Game Filters.

Restart Windows if a normal app restart does not help. A restart completes pending app and driver updates and unloads an old overlay session.

Update the NVIDIA App

An up-to-date driver can still have broken filters when the NVIDIA app itself is too old.

NVIDIA has changed the minimum app version required by certain newer Game Ready drivers. This means updating only the graphics driver may create a version mismatch with an old NVIDIA app installation.

To check for an app update:

1. Open NVIDIA app.
2. Select Settings.
3. Open About.
4. Note the installed version.
5. Allow NVIDIA app to update.
6. Restart the app and Windows.

If automatic updates are blocked:

1. Download the current NVIDIA app installer from NVIDIA’s official website.
2. Close games and NVIDIA app.
3. Run the installer as administrator.
4. Complete the installation.
5. Restart Windows.

Do not download repackaged NVIDIA app installers from third-party driver sites.

Update the NVIDIA Graphics Driver

NVIDIA recommends a supported current display driver for the NVIDIA app and its overlay.

1. Open NVIDIA app.
2. Select Drivers.
3. Check for an available Game Ready Driver.
4. Download and install it.
5. Restart Windows.
6. Launch the game and test Alt + F3.

A Game Ready Driver is generally the appropriate choice for gaming. A Studio Driver can still run games, but it may be validated on a different release schedule.

If the filter problem began immediately after a driver update, installing an even newer driver may not help. Check whether NVIDIA has released a correction or test the previous stable driver.

Reinstall the NVIDIA Graphics Driver

A damaged installation can prevent Freestyle components from loading even when games and normal graphics output still work.

Try a clean driver installation:

1. Download the correct Game Ready Driver for your GPU and Windows version.
2. Close games and recording applications.
3. Run the NVIDIA driver installer.
4. Choose Custom installation.
5. Select Perform a clean installation when available.
6. Complete the installation.
7. Restart Windows.
8. Re-enable NVIDIA Overlay and test the game.

A clean installation resets NVIDIA driver profiles. Record important customised settings first.

Display Driver Uninstaller should remain a last resort for a severely corrupted driver installation. It is not a way to force an unsupported filter into a game.

Repair or Reinstall NVIDIA App

If the driver works but the Game Filter interface is missing or blank, repair the application separately.

1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
2. Find NVIDIA app.
3. Open its available options.
4. Use Repair or Reset if Windows provides those controls.
5. Restart the app.

If no repair option is available or it does not help:

1. Uninstall NVIDIA app.
2. Restart Windows.
3. Download the current installer from NVIDIA.
4. Install the app.
5. Enable NVIDIA Overlay.
6. Launch a supported game and test the filters.

Removing NVIDIA app does not normally require uninstalling the display driver. Treat the app and driver as separate components unless both are damaged.

Make Sure the Game Uses the NVIDIA GPU

On a laptop with integrated and dedicated graphics, Windows may launch a game on the integrated GPU. This can interfere with NVIDIA app detection and supported features.

1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
2. Add or select the game’s executable.
3. Select Options.
4. Choose High performance when it identifies the NVIDIA GPU.
5. Save the change.
6. Restart the game.

Also connect the laptop to power and select an appropriate performance mode.

Do not disable the integrated GPU in Device Manager merely to test Game Filters. Hybrid-graphics laptops may depend on it for the internal display.

Let NVIDIA App Detect the Game

NVIDIA app may fail to associate the running executable with its game profile when the installation is new, moved or modified.

1. Open NVIDIA app.
2. Go to its games or graphics section.
3. Run a new scan for installed games.
4. Add the game’s installation directory if the app provides a scan-location option.
5. Confirm that the correct executable is detected.
6. Launch the game through its normal launcher.

Avoid renaming the game’s executable. Modified file names, unofficial launchers and test clients may not match NVIDIA’s supported profile.

If a game is detected but Game Filters remain unavailable, detection alone does not prove Freestyle support.

Verify and Repair the Game Files

Corrupted game files or an incomplete update can prevent the overlay from recognising the current game build.

Use the repair option in the launcher:

• Steam: open the game’s Properties and verify installed files.
• Epic Games Launcher: open the game’s menu and select Manage or Verify.
• Xbox app: open the game’s advanced management options and use Verify and Repair when available.
• Other launchers: look for Scan, Repair or Verify.

Restart the launcher and Windows after the repair.

Do not replace game DLL files with downloads from forums or file-sharing websites. This can create malware, instability and anti-cheat violations.

Check the Game’s Display Mode

Freestyle generally works across supported modern display modes, but switching modes can reset the graphics context and help the overlay attach correctly.

Test:

• Fullscreen
• Borderless windowed
• Windowed mode

Apply the change, restart the game and press Alt + F3.

If one mode works, use it temporarily and check for game, driver or NVIDIA app updates. Do not claim that exclusive fullscreen is universally required because compatibility differs by title and graphics API.

Disable Conflicting Overlays Temporarily

Several overlays can load into the same game:

• Steam Overlay
• Discord Overlay
• Xbox Game Bar
• AMD software on mixed-hardware systems
• MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
• OBS game capture
• Game-launcher overlays
• RGB and hardware-monitoring utilities

Turn off nonessential overlays, restart the game and test NVIDIA Game Filters. Re-enable them one at a time after identifying the conflict.

Do not permanently disable Windows security or anti-cheat software. If filters work only when security protection is turned off, restore protection and seek an official update or supported configuration.

Check Antivirus and Controlled Folder Access

Security software can block an application update or prevent NVIDIA app from accessing a required folder.

Check Windows Security protection history and third-party antivirus logs for a blocked official NVIDIA component.

If the application is verified and installed from NVIDIA:

1. Restore a falsely quarantined official file.
2. Allow the signed NVIDIA application when appropriate.
3. Run the official installer again.
4. Restart Windows.

Do not exclude the entire Windows drive or game library from antivirus scanning. Use the narrowest legitimate exception and remove it when no longer required.

Restore the Windows Videos Folder

NVIDIA documents an overlay problem that occurs when NVIDIA app cannot access the Windows Videos folder. An incomplete overlay can also affect features reached through it.

1. Open File Explorer.
2. Select This PC.
3. Open Videos.
4. Confirm that the folder exists and is accessible.
5. If it was moved to a disconnected drive or unavailable network location, restore it to a valid local path.
6. Restart NVIDIA app.
7. Test Alt + Z and Alt + F3.

If the entire overlay is blank, fix that problem before troubleshooting individual filters.

Install the Media Feature Pack on Windows 11 N

Windows 11 N editions exclude certain media components. NVIDIA states that users of Windows N may need Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack before the in-game overlay works correctly.

To check the edition:

1. Open Settings > System > About.
2. Look under Windows specifications.
3. Check whether the edition includes the letter N.

If it does:

1. Open Settings > Apps > Optional features.
2. Select the option to view or add features.
3. Find Media Feature Pack.
4. Install it.
5. Restart Windows.
6. Reinstall or repair NVIDIA app if necessary.

Do not install the Media Feature Pack on a standard Windows edition that already includes the components.

Reset an Existing Filter Profile

A saved filter stack can become incompatible after a game or app update.

1. Launch the affected supported game.
2. Press Alt + F3.
3. Select the existing style or profile.
4. Remove its filters one at a time.
5. Create a new empty style.
6. Add one basic filter.
7. Test before adding another.

This is particularly relevant to ARC Raiders because the game now prevents all filters from being enabled simultaneously. An old multi-filter stack may no longer be accepted even if individual filters remain available.

Save screenshots of your previous filter values before clearing them if you want a reference.

RTX Dynamic Vibrance or RTX HDR Is Missing

Some filters have additional hardware, display and game requirements.

RTX Dynamic Vibrance and RTX HDR may depend on:

• A supported GeForce RTX GPU
• A current NVIDIA app
• A compatible graphics driver
• A supported game or application
• Suitable Windows display settings
• The required display mode and HDR state
• A supported monitor configuration

A missing RTX filter does not necessarily mean that standard Freestyle is broken.

Check whether ordinary colour, brightness or detail filters appear. If only an RTX filter is unavailable, verify its specific requirements rather than reinstalling every NVIDIA component.

NVIDIA Filters Work in One Game but Not Another

This usually indicates a game-specific issue rather than a system-wide NVIDIA failure.

Check:

• Whether the second game officially supports Freestyle
• Whether its developer recently restricted filters
• Whether you launched a different test or beta client
• Whether the game uses a different graphics API
• Whether anti-cheat rules changed
• Whether the game executable was renamed
• Whether the game is running on the NVIDIA GPU

Do not force the unsupported game into another NVIDIA profile through unofficial profile-editing tools. Profile manipulation can cause crashes and may violate the rules of competitive games.

NVIDIA Filters Stopped Working After an Update

Identify which component changed:

• NVIDIA app
• Graphics driver
• Windows
• The game
• The game launcher
• Anti-cheat software

If the NVIDIA app and driver changed together, update both to compatible current versions.

If only the game changed, read its patch notes before rolling back the graphics driver. ARC Raiders is a clear example where a game update deliberately altered Freestyle behaviour.

If filters fail across every supported game after a driver update, perform a clean reinstall or test the previous stable driver. If only one game fails, rolling back a system-wide driver may be unnecessary.

Safe Alternatives When a Game Restricts NVIDIA Filters

When a developer intentionally restricts Freestyle, use supported options:

• In-game brightness and gamma controls
• Colour-blind accessibility modes
• Monitor brightness and contrast
• Windows HDR calibration
• NVIDIA Control Panel colour settings that comply with the game’s rules
• Official game accessibility settings

Be careful with global colour changes because they affect the desktop and every application. Record the original values before adjusting them.

Avoid unofficial ReShade injection, profile manipulation or anti-cheat bypass methods in a competitive online game. Even when a visual tool seems harmless, the game developer decides which modifications are permitted.
