How to Turn Off CarPlay on iPhone

This ends the current CarPlay session but does not erase the vehicle from the iPhone. CarPlay can start again the next time you connect the phone to the same data-enabled port.

Some vehicles support both wired and wireless CarPlay. Unplugging the cable may not end CarPlay if the vehicle immediately changes to its wireless connection. If that happens, disconnect through the car’s device menu or use the wireless methods below.

Method 3: Forget a Car on the iPhone

Forgetting the vehicle is the best way to turn off CarPlay for one car without blocking it everywhere.

1. Open Settings on the iPhone.
2. Tap General.
3. Select CarPlay.
4. Tap the vehicle under My Cars.
5. Select Forget This Car.
6. Confirm the removal.

The vehicle disappears from the saved CarPlay list. The iPhone should no longer start CarPlay with that car until you complete setup again.

Removing only the CarPlay profile can leave ordinary Bluetooth calling and audio available. This can be useful when you want hands-free calls but do not want the CarPlay interface. Select a Different Connection Type in the Car

Open the vehicle’s device manager and select Bluetooth Audio, Phone Only, Do Not Launch Projection or the closest equivalent. Some cars let you disable Apple CarPlay for an individual phone while preserving basic calls and music.

Turn Off Automatic Projection

Look in the car’s settings for:

• Smartphone Integration
• Phone Projection
• Apple CarPlay
• Device Manager
• Connections
• Projection Preferences

Turn off automatic launch or automatic projection if the option exists. Consult the vehicle manual because these controls are not standardised across manufacturers.

Forget This Car

If the car offers no auto-launch switch, remove its saved CarPlay profile from Settings > General > CarPlay. This is more reliable than closing CarPlay after every connection.

Use a Charging-Only Port

Turning off Auto-Join for the vehicle’s Wi-Fi network may stop the wireless stage, but it can also leave an incomplete connection that repeatedly attempts to start. Forgetting CarPlay and choosing Bluetooth-only pairing is usually cleaner.

How to Turn Off CarPlay but Keep Charging

There are three practical approaches:

Use a Power-Only USB Port

Connect to a port not labelled for CarPlay, media or smartphone projection. Confirm in the vehicle manual that it is intended for charging.

Use a 12-Volt USB Charger

A reputable charger connected to the vehicle’s accessory socket can charge the iPhone independently of the infotainment system.

Disable CarPlay Through Screen Time

If you must use the same data-enabled USB port, turn CarPlay off through Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps & Features. The phone should still receive electrical power.

A charge-only cable may also prevent CarPlay, but I do not recommend buying a deliberately limited cable when a charging port or Screen Time setting is available. Using clearly identified equipment is easier to troubleshoot later.

Turn Off CarPlay From the Vehicle

An iPhone is only one side of the connection. Many vehicles store their own CarPlay preference and device list.

While parked:

1. Open the infotainment Settings menu.
2. Find Connections, Devices, Smartphone Integration or Phone Projection.
3. Select the iPhone.
4. Disable Apple CarPlay, choose Bluetooth-only mode or remove the phone.
5. Restart the infotainment system if the change does not take effect.

Deleting the vehicle from the iPhone is only half of the privacy cleanup. The car may retain your device name, Bluetooth information, call history, recent destinations or contacts that were permitted to sync.

Before returning a rental or selling a vehicle:

1. Open Settings > General > CarPlay on the iPhone.
2. Select the vehicle and tap Forget This Car.

Driving Focus is not CarPlay. It controls notifications and communication behaviour while driving. You can turn off the automatic Focus activation and continue using CarPlay.

2. Tap Focus.

5. Turn off Activate With CarPlay or adjust automatic activation.

If a Driving Focus notification appears while you are a passenger, choose I’m Not Driving when the option is available.

Disabling Driving Focus does not stop the CarPlay dashboard, navigation, music or connection. It only changes the Focus behaviour.

Disabling CarPlay through Screen Time does not necessarily stop the car from handling:

• Contact syncing.
• Vehicle notifications.
• The manufacturer’s companion app.

CarPlay Is Off but the iPhone Still Charges

This is also normal. Charging uses electrical power, while CarPlay requires a data or wireless connection and permission to run.

• Siri is unavailable.
• A power-only USB port is used.
• The data portion of a cable or port is not active.
