Going back to Windows 11 from Bazzite is straightforward once you know whether Windows is still installed on the computer. If you set up Bazzite beside Windows in a dual-boot configuration, you usually do not need to reinstall Windows. You can boot into Windows, make Windows Boot Manager the default, remove the Bazzite partitions carefully, and reclaim the unused space.
If Bazzite completely replaced Windows, there is no Windows-style “Go back” button inside Bazzite. You need to reinstall Windows 11 with Microsoft installation media or use the factory recovery system provided by the PC or gaming-handheld manufacturer.
The most important part is protecting your files and identifying the correct partitions before deleting anything. Bazzite commonly uses Linux filesystems such as Btrfs and ext4, while Windows normally uses NTFS plus EFI, recovery, and possibly OEM partitions. Deleting the wrong EFI or recovery partition can leave Windows unable to start.
I will cover the safe process for shared-drive dual boot, separate-drive dual boot, a full Bazzite replacement, ROG Ally and Legion Go recovery, missing Windows Boot Manager, activation, drivers, and the problems that can appear after returning to Windows.
Quick Answer: How to Return to Windows 11 From Bazzite
Use the method that matches your setup.
| Your Current Setup | Best Way Back to Windows 11 |
|---|---|
| Windows and Bazzite share one SSD | Boot Windows, set Windows Boot Manager first, delete only Bazzite partitions, then extend Windows if possible |
| Windows is on one SSD and Bazzite is on another | Confirm Windows boots without the Bazzite drive, then wipe or repurpose the Bazzite drive |
| Bazzite completely replaced Windows | Create a Windows 11 installation USB and perform a clean install |
| ASUS ROG Ally or Ally X | Use ASUS Cloud Recovery when available, or install Windows from USB |
| Lenovo Legion Go | Use Lenovo recovery media or install Windows from Microsoft media |
| Windows remains installed but will not boot | Use Windows Startup Repair first, then repair Windows boot files if necessary |
Do not delete any partition until you know which scenario applies.
Can You Switch From Bazzite Back to Windows 11?
Yes.
Bazzite is a Linux-based operating system built on Fedora Atomic technology. Installing it does not permanently lock a computer into Linux, and it does not prevent Windows 11 from being installed again.
What changes is the amount of work required.
If Windows is still on the drive, returning to Windows may take only a few steps. If Bazzite replaced the entire Windows installation, switching back requires a new Windows installation or a manufacturer recovery image.
Bazzite itself maintains an official uninstalling Bazzite and returning to Windows page for users who want to remove it from a dual-boot computer.
There Is No “Go Back to Windows” Button in Bazzite
Do not look for an option similar to:
Settings > Recovery > Go back
That Windows feature is designed for returning from one Windows version to a previous Windows installation under specific conditions. It does not restore an operating system that was erased when Bazzite was installed.
If Windows was deleted, Bazzite cannot reconstruct the old Windows installation.
You will need one of these:
- A Windows 11 installation USB
- ASUS Cloud Recovery
- Lenovo recovery media
- Another manufacturer recovery image
- A full system-image backup you created before installing Bazzite
If you still have a dual-boot Windows installation, do not reinstall Windows unnecessarily.
Before You Remove Bazzite
Spend a few minutes preparing before changing partitions or reinstalling Windows.
Back Up Files Stored in Bazzite
A clean Windows installation can permanently remove everything stored on the target drive.
Back up:
- Documents
- Downloads
- Pictures and videos
- Screenshots
- Desktop files
- Browser profiles and bookmarks
- SSH keys
- Work projects
- Emulator save files
- ROM saves
- Game configurations
- Mods
- Non-Steam game saves
- Flatpak application data you need
- Files in your Bazzite home directory
Do not assume Steam Cloud contains every game save. Some games do not support cloud synchronization, and emulators often store saves locally.
Copy important files to:
- An external SSD
- A USB drive
- NAS storage
- Another internal disk
- A trusted cloud-storage service
Open a few copied files before erasing the drive to confirm the backup is usable.
Check Whether Windows Is Still Installed
Restart the computer.
If GRUB appears, look for:
Windows Boot Manager
Select it.
You can also open the motherboard or laptop UEFI boot menu and look for Windows Boot Manager.
If Windows starts normally, you have a dual-boot setup and should use one of the removal methods later in this article.
If there is no Windows Boot Manager and the entire internal SSD contains Bazzite, plan for a clean Windows installation.
Know Which Drive Contains Windows
This matters especially on desktops with multiple SSDs.
Write down:
- SSD manufacturer
- SSD capacity
- Which physical drive contains Windows
- Which physical drive contains Bazzite
For example:
Disk 0: Samsung 1 TB - Windows
Disk 1: Crucial 2 TB - Bazzite
Do not rely only on disk numbers. Windows Setup and firmware can enumerate drives differently from Linux.
Have Your BitLocker Recovery Key if Windows Is Encrypted
If Windows is still installed and BitLocker or Device Encryption is enabled, have the recovery key available before changing boot settings.
Firmware, Secure Boot, and bootloader changes can sometimes cause Windows to request the recovery key.
If BitLocker was fully disabled before installing Bazzite, this may not apply.
Check Your Windows Edition
If you need to reinstall Windows, install the same edition that was previously licensed on the device.
For example:
Windows 11 Home -> reinstall Windows 11 Home
Windows 11 Pro -> reinstall Windows 11 Pro
Microsoft states that Windows normally reactivates automatically after a reinstall when the same licensed edition is installed on the same hardware.
If the computer originally came with Windows, the product key may also be stored in the firmware.
Method 1: Remove Bazzite When Windows and Bazzite Share the Same Drive
This method is for a computer where Windows 11 and Bazzite occupy different partitions on one SSD.
Do not start by deleting Linux partitions from Bazzite. First make sure Windows can start independently.
Step 1: Boot Into Windows 11
Restart the PC and choose Windows Boot Manager from GRUB or the UEFI boot menu.
Use Windows for the remaining steps.
If you cannot find the firmware boot menu, my guide to opening BIOS or UEFI in Windows 11 explains common keys and boot-menu methods for ASUS, Lenovo, Dell, HP, MSI, Acer, and other PCs.
Step 2: Make Windows Boot Manager the First Boot Option
Restart into BIOS or UEFI.
Open a section named something similar to:
- Boot
- Boot Priority
- Boot Order
- UEFI Boot
- OS Boot Manager
Move:
Windows Boot Manager
above Bazzite, Fedora, Linux Boot Manager, or the Bazzite drive.
Save the change and restart.
Windows should now boot without depending on the GRUB menu.
Boot Windows successfully at least twice before deleting anything.
Step 3: Open Disk Management
Press:
Windows + X
and select Disk Management.
Find the disk containing Windows and Bazzite.
A typical Windows drive may contain:
- EFI System Partition
- Windows C: partition
- Recovery partition
- OEM recovery partition
- Bazzite/Linux partitions
Bazzite partitions may appear without a Windows drive letter because Windows does not natively use Btrfs or ext4 as normal Windows volumes.
Bazzite’s documented manual layout can include a small EFI partition, an ext4 /boot partition, and a larger Btrfs partition. Automatic installations can differ, so do not identify a partition by size alone.
Step 4: Identify the Bazzite Partitions Carefully
Your Windows partition is normally easy to identify because it is:
- NTFS
- Assigned C:
- Large enough to contain Windows and your programs
- Marked as the boot Windows volume while Windows is running
Do not delete:
- C:
- Windows EFI System Partition
- Windows Recovery partition
- OEM recovery partitions
- Microsoft Reserved partitions
- Data partitions you still use
The largest Linux partition is normally the Bazzite Btrfs system and home storage.
A Bazzite /boot partition may be much smaller.
The EFI partition is where extra caution is required.
Do Not Delete an EFI Partition Just Because It Looks Like Bazzite
A dual-boot installation can involve more than one EFI partition, but Windows and Bazzite can also interact with the same system boot environment depending on how the machine was configured.
If you are not completely certain which EFI partition Windows uses, leave it alone.
A small unused EFI partition consumes very little disk space. Accidentally deleting the Windows EFI partition can make the computer unbootable.
You can remove the large Bazzite partitions and leave an uncertain small EFI partition in place.
Step 5: Delete Only the Confirmed Bazzite Partitions
In Disk Management:
- Right-click a confirmed Bazzite partition.
- Select Delete Volume or the available delete option.
- Confirm.
- Repeat only for the Bazzite partitions you have identified confidently.
The deleted area should become Unallocated space.
If Windows refuses to delete a Linux partition, do not start deleting other partitions randomly. The safest option is to leave it temporarily or use an advanced partition tool only after creating a full backup.
Step 6: Extend the Windows Partition
If the new unallocated space is immediately to the right of C: in Disk Management:
- Right-click C:.
- Select Extend Volume.
- Use the available unallocated space.
- Complete the wizard.
If Extend Volume is greyed out, the free space is probably not directly beside C:.
Windows Disk Management cannot move partitions to make the free space contiguous.
You can:
- Leave the unallocated space temporarily
- Create a separate NTFS data volume
- Use a reputable partition manager after making a complete backup
Do not delete a recovery partition simply to make the Extend Volume button available.
Step 7: Restart and Confirm Windows Boots Normally
Restart at least twice.
Check that:
- Windows Boot Manager starts automatically
- GRUB no longer controls the normal boot process
- C: has the expected capacity
- Windows Update works
- Your files remain available
A stale Bazzite entry may remain in the firmware boot menu. It is harmless if Windows Boot Manager is first and Bazzite has already been removed.
You do not need to risk editing EFI files merely to remove an unused menu label.
Method 2: Remove Bazzite When It Is Installed on a Separate Drive
This is the easiest dual-boot arrangement to reverse.
Bazzite’s current dual-boot documentation recommends using a dedicated drive when possible, and it recommends keeping operating-system boot files separated.
Step 1: Set Windows Boot Manager as the Default
Enter BIOS or UEFI and make Windows Boot Manager the first boot option.
Restart and confirm Windows loads.
Step 2: Confirm Windows Can Boot Without the Bazzite Drive
If this is a desktop and the drives are easy to access:
- Shut down the PC.
- Turn off the power supply.
- Disconnect power.
- Disconnect the Bazzite SSD.
- Start the PC.
If Windows starts normally, you have proven that its boot files are independent.
Shut down again and reconnect the Bazzite drive.
Laptop and handheld users should not open a device solely for this test if doing so risks damage or warranty issues. You can instead select Windows Boot Manager directly from UEFI and verify repeated successful boots.
Step 3: Wipe or Repurpose the Bazzite Drive
Boot Windows.
Open Disk Management.
Identify the Bazzite disk by its capacity and physical drive details.
Delete the Bazzite partitions on that disk.
Once the entire intended disk is unallocated:
- Right-click the unallocated area.
- Select New Simple Volume.
- Choose the size.
- Assign a drive letter.
- Format it as NTFS.
You can now use the old Bazzite SSD for games, files, recordings, or other Windows storage.
Do not wipe a disk until you have verified that it does not contain Windows, backups, or personal data.
Method 3: Reinstall Windows 11 When Bazzite Replaced Windows
Use this method when Windows is no longer installed.
You need:
- Another working Windows PC
- Reliable internet
- A blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB
- Your Bazzite files backed up
- The correct Windows edition
- A charger for laptops and handhelds
Microsoft’s official Windows installation media instructions explain how to create the bootable USB with the Media Creation Tool.
Step 1: Create the Windows 11 USB
On a working Windows PC:
- Open Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page.
- Find Create Windows 11 Installation Media.
- Download the Media Creation Tool.
- Insert the blank USB drive.
- Run the tool.
- Accept the license terms.
- Select the correct language and Windows 11 option.
- Choose USB flash drive.
- Select the correct USB device.
- Allow the tool to download Windows and prepare the drive.
Everything already stored on that USB drive will be erased.
Step 2: Shut Down Bazzite
Complete your backups and shut the device down fully.
Do not use sleep or suspend.
Connect the Windows installation USB.
Step 3: Boot From the Windows USB
Open the UEFI boot menu while powering on the device.
Common boot-menu keys include:
| Brand | Common Boot Menu Key |
|---|---|
| ASUS | Esc |
| Acer | F12 |
| Dell | F12 |
| HP | Esc, then F9 |
| Lenovo | F12 |
| MSI | F11 |
| Gigabyte | F12 |
| ASRock | F11 |
The exact key can differ by model.
Select the entry beginning with UEFI for the Windows USB.
If the USB does not appear, confirm that:
- It was created correctly
- UEFI USB boot is enabled
- The flash drive is connected directly
- Another USB port works
- The device supports the selected Windows installer architecture
Step 4: Start Windows 11 Setup
After the installer loads:
- Select the language.
- Select keyboard settings.
- Choose Install Windows 11.
- Confirm the clean-install warning.
- Continue.
The wording may differ slightly as Microsoft updates Windows Setup.
Step 5: Handle the Product Key Screen
If Windows Setup asks for a product key and this device was already activated with Windows 11:
Select:
I don't have a product key
Then choose the same Windows edition that was previously licensed.
Do not install Pro simply because it has more features if the computer only has a Home digital license.
Once Windows goes online, activation should normally occur automatically when the hardware and edition match the existing digital license.
Step 6: Choose the Correct Installation Drive
This is the step where you can permanently erase Bazzite.
Identify the target drive by:
- Capacity
- SSD model when available
- Existing partition layout
- Whether it is the original internal system drive
If the computer has several internal drives and you can disconnect non-target drives safely, doing so reduces the chance of deleting the wrong disk.
Step 7: Delete Bazzite From the Target Drive
If your goal is to remove Bazzite completely and use the whole target drive for Windows:
- Select a partition on the target drive.
- Click Delete Partition.
- Confirm.
- Repeat for the remaining partitions on that same target drive.
- Stop when the target drive shows only Unallocated Space.
- Select the unallocated space.
- Click Next.
Windows Setup will create the EFI, Microsoft Reserved, Windows, and recovery partitions it needs.
Do not delete partitions on another SSD or HDD.
If you cannot identify the correct disk confidently, cancel Setup and verify the hardware first.
Step 8: Complete Windows Setup
Windows will copy files and restart several times.
Remove the USB when the installation no longer needs it or when the PC begins booting from the internal Windows installation.
Complete the setup screens for:
- Region
- Keyboard
- Network
- Microsoft account or available sign-in method
- Privacy options
- Device name
If you later decide that you do not want your Microsoft account used for everyday Windows sign-in, my guide to removing a Microsoft account from Windows 11 explains the safe ways to switch account types without deleting the online Microsoft account.
What If Windows Is Still Installed but Windows Boot Manager Is Missing?
Do not reinstall Windows immediately.
The Windows partition may be intact while only the boot files are damaged or GRUB has become the only working boot path.
Try Startup Repair First
Create or connect a Windows 11 installation USB.
Boot from it and choose the recovery option rather than starting the installation.
Open:
Troubleshoot
> Advanced options
> Startup Repair
Select the Windows installation when prompted.
Allow Startup Repair to check the boot configuration.
Restart and look for Windows Boot Manager again.
Use BCDBoot Only if Startup Repair Fails
BCDBoot is Microsoft’s tool for creating or repairing Windows boot files. It is useful when the Windows installation still exists but the UEFI system partition no longer has working Windows boot files.
This is an advanced method. Do not format the EFI partition.
Boot into the Windows recovery Command Prompt.
Start by finding the Windows volume:
diskpart
list volume
exit
The Windows partition may not use C: inside the recovery environment.
Check likely drive letters:
dir C:\Windows
dir D:\Windows
dir E:\Windows
Stop when you find the drive that contains a real Windows folder.
Next identify the EFI System Partition in DiskPart. It is normally FAT32 and relatively small.
Assign it a temporary drive letter only after you are certain it is the correct EFI partition:
diskpart
list volume
select volume <number>
assign letter=S
exit
If the Windows folder is on D:, run:
bcdboot D:\Windows /s S: /f UEFI
Replace D: with the actual Windows volume letter.
Restart the computer and choose Windows Boot Manager.
If you cannot identify the Windows or EFI partition confidently, stop and use professional help rather than guessing. A wrong select volume followed by destructive commands can cause data loss.
Should You Use bootrec /fixmbr?
Not as the first solution on a modern Windows 11 UEFI computer.
Most Windows 11 systems boot through UEFI and an EFI System Partition rather than the old BIOS/MBR boot method.
Startup Repair and BCDBoot are more relevant when Windows Boot Manager or EFI boot files need repair.
Do not copy a long list of old bootrec commands from a Windows 7 or legacy BIOS tutorial and run them without checking your boot mode.
Returning to Windows 11 on an ASUS ROG Ally or Ally X
Bazzite is popular on handheld gaming PCs, so many searches for this problem involve the ROG Ally.
On a supported ASUS gaming handheld, ASUS Cloud Recovery is often a better choice than a generic Microsoft clean installation.
Cloud Recovery can restore the factory Windows environment and manufacturer software in one process.
This can save time because a generic Windows installation may require you to reinstall:
- ASUS System Control Interface components
- Armoury Crate SE
- MyASUS
- AMD graphics and chipset drivers
- Audio drivers
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth drivers
- Controller-related components
- Device-specific firmware utilities
Use ASUS Cloud Recovery
The exact interface can change, but the general process is:
- Connect the ROG Ally to power.
- Shut it down.
- Enter UEFI BIOS.
- Open ASUS Cloud Recovery or MyASUS recovery.
- Connect to Wi-Fi when requested.
- Confirm that you understand the internal drive will be restored.
- Start recovery.
- Keep the device connected to power.
- Allow the recovery process and Windows setup to complete.
Back up your Bazzite files first because factory recovery can erase the internal SSD.
If Cloud Recovery is unavailable or fails, use a Microsoft Windows 11 USB instead.
Returning to Windows 11 on Lenovo Legion Go
For a Legion Go, you can use either:
- Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation media
- Lenovo recovery media created through Lenovo’s Digital Download Recovery Service
The Lenovo recovery route is useful when you want a factory-style installation with the device-specific software and drivers expected on the handheld.
A generic Microsoft installation works as well, but you may need to install:
- AMD graphics and chipset drivers
- Legion Space
- Controller firmware
- Audio drivers
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth drivers
- Lenovo power and firmware components
Bazzite’s own Legion Go documentation recommends performing BIOS and controller firmware updates from Windows, which is another reason to restore the normal Lenovo Windows software after switching back.
What If Windows Setup Cannot See the SSD?
Do not start deleting partitions on another drive.
If the internal SSD is missing from Windows Setup, possible causes include:
- Intel VMD or RAID configuration
- Missing storage-controller driver
- BIOS storage-mode setting
- SSD firmware issue
- The installer was booted in an unexpected mode
- A hardware problem
On an OEM laptop, download the exact storage driver for the model and use Load driver in Windows Setup when required.
On supported devices, manufacturer recovery media can be easier because it already includes the required storage and device drivers.
Do not randomly toggle AHCI, RAID, VMD, CSM, or Secure Boot settings unless you understand what your device requires.
What If the Windows USB Will Not Boot?
Try these checks:
- Recreate the USB with Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool.
- Use another USB flash drive.
- Connect it directly rather than through a hub.
- Open the one-time UEFI boot menu.
- Select the UEFI USB entry.
- Check that USB boot is enabled.
- Restore reasonable BIOS defaults if unusual boot settings were changed.
- Confirm the PC meets Windows 11 hardware requirements.
Bazzite supports Secure Boot when configured with its Universal Blue key, so you may have changed Secure Boot settings during installation.
Windows 11 normally works with Secure Boot enabled on supported hardware. If you modified custom keys solely for Bazzite, consult your device documentation before resetting firmware keys.
Should Secure Boot Be Enabled After Returning to Windows?
For a normal Windows 11 installation on supported hardware, I recommend returning the firmware to its standard Windows-compatible Secure Boot configuration.
Do this after Windows is booting normally.
Do not clear keys or change Secure Boot mode blindly.
A good sequence is:
- Install or repair Windows.
- Confirm Windows Boot Manager works.
- Install firmware and driver updates.
- Restore the manufacturer’s normal Secure Boot configuration.
- Restart.
- Check Windows Security.
If BitLocker or Device Encryption is enabled, have the recovery key before firmware changes.
Will Windows 11 Activate Again?
Usually, yes.
If the device previously had an activated copy of Windows 11 and you reinstall the same edition on the same motherboard, Microsoft’s digital licensing system normally activates Windows again after the computer connects to the internet.
Check:
Settings > System > Activation
Look for an activated status.
If activation fails:
- Confirm that you installed the correct edition.
- Connect to the internet.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the digital license.
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Run the activation troubleshooter if available.
A motherboard replacement is more likely to create an activation problem than replacing Bazzite with Windows on the same hardware.
Do You Need to Buy Windows Again?
Not normally if the PC already had a valid Windows license.
Common situations include:
- Windows license embedded in UEFI firmware
- Digital license tied to the hardware
- Digital license associated with a Microsoft account
- Retail Windows product key
If you built the PC yourself and never activated Windows before installing Bazzite, you still need a valid license.
Do not buy extremely cheap product keys from unknown sites simply because Windows Setup asks for activation.
What to Install After Windows 11 Returns
A clean Microsoft installation may not contain every manufacturer utility.
Run Windows Update First
Open:
Settings > Windows Update
Install all important updates.
Restart and check again until there are no important pending updates.
Also review Advanced options > Optional updates for relevant drivers, but prefer manufacturer drivers for specialised hardware when the OEM specifically requires them.
Install Chipset Drivers
Install the chipset package for:
- AMD
- Intel
- Your laptop or handheld manufacturer
Chipset drivers help Windows correctly manage power, USB controllers, PCIe devices, and other platform components.
Install the Graphics Driver
Install the current graphics package for your GPU.
For:
- AMD Radeon, use the appropriate AMD or OEM package
- NVIDIA GeForce, use the appropriate NVIDIA driver
- Intel graphics, use the correct Intel or manufacturer driver
Gaming handhelds may benefit from the manufacturer-tested graphics driver where device-specific features depend on it.
Install Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Audio, and Controller Drivers
Check Device Manager for:
- Unknown devices
- Warning symbols
- Missing network adapters
- Missing audio devices
- Missing Bluetooth
- Controller or sensor devices without drivers
Do not download drivers from random driver-download websites.
Install Manufacturer Utilities
Examples include:
- Armoury Crate SE on supported ROG Ally devices
- MyASUS
- Legion Space
- Lenovo Vantage
- Dell SupportAssist
- HP Support Assistant
- MSI Center
- AcerSense
Only install utilities that apply to the exact device.
What Happens to Your Steam Games?
It depends on where the games were stored.
If the games were on the same Bazzite partition you deleted, they are gone unless backed up.
If the games were on:
- Another SSD
- An external drive
- A Windows-compatible NTFS data drive
you may be able to reconnect that library in Steam.
However, a Steam library created on a Linux filesystem such as Btrfs or ext4 is not directly usable as a normal Windows drive without additional software.
For most users, reinstalling the affected games through Steam is simpler and safer.
Steam Cloud can restore supported save files after you sign in, but verify games that do not support cloud saves.
Can You Keep the Bazzite Home Partition and Install Windows?
Technically you can preserve a separate Linux data partition, but Windows does not natively treat Btrfs or ext4 as ordinary Windows storage.
If your goal is to leave Linux permanently and use the entire SSD for Windows, back up the files first and perform a clean Windows partition layout.
Keeping an unused Linux partition usually creates unnecessary complexity.
Can You Install Windows Without Deleting Bazzite?
Yes, if you want dual boot rather than a complete return to Windows.
You can:
- Keep Bazzite on one drive
- Install Windows on another drive
- Keep both systems on properly planned partitions
If using separate drives, Bazzite recommends disconnecting the Bazzite drive while installing Windows so Windows Setup does not reuse Bazzite’s EFI partition.
Afterward, reconnect the drive and select the operating system through the UEFI boot menu.
Do not follow this method if your goal is to remove Bazzite completely.
Can You Factory Reset Windows After Returning From Bazzite?
Yes, after Windows has been restored and is working normally.
A reset can be useful later if Windows becomes damaged, but it is not the method for converting a Bazzite-only installation into Windows.
If Windows still exists and only needs repair, you may not need to erase it at all. My Windows 11 reinstall guide explains the differences between repair reinstall, reset, and clean installation.
Windows Boots but Has Problems After Bazzite Is Removed
If Windows starts but behaves strangely, do not reinstall it immediately.
Run Windows Update
Install current updates and restart.
Check Device Manager
Look for missing or disabled hardware.
Reinstall Important Drivers
Concentrate on:
- Chipset
- GPU
- Wi-Fi
- Bluetooth
- Audio
- Touchscreen
- Controller
- Sensors
Check Windows Boot Files
If the computer sometimes starts Windows and sometimes displays an old GRUB or Bazzite screen, make Windows Boot Manager first in UEFI.
Test Safe Mode
If Windows starts but crashes after driver installation, boot Windows 11 in Safe Mode and remove the faulty driver or startup software before attempting another clean installation.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Deleting Every Small Partition
Do not assume every small partition belongs to Bazzite.
Windows also uses small EFI, recovery, and reserved partitions.
Deleting the EFI Partition Before Testing Windows
Boot Windows independently first.
If you are unsure which EFI partition belongs to which operating system, leave the small partition alone.
Wiping the Wrong SSD
Identify disks by capacity and model.
Disconnect non-target drives when practical.
Installing the Wrong Windows Edition
A Windows 11 Home digital license does not automatically license Windows 11 Pro.
Install the edition that matches the previous activation.
Forgetting Local Game Saves
Steam Cloud is not universal.
Back up emulator saves, mods, screenshots, and non-cloud game files manually.
Using an Unofficial Windows ISO
Use Microsoft installation media or your manufacturer’s official recovery system.
Modified images can contain removed security components, malware, or unsupported configuration changes.
Formatting the EFI Partition During Boot Repair
BCDBoot can repair boot files without you casually formatting the EFI partition.
Formatting the wrong EFI partition can break other installed systems.
Changing Many BIOS Settings at Once
Do not simultaneously change:
- Secure Boot
- TPM
- VMD
- RAID
- AHCI
- CSM
- Boot mode
Make only the changes your hardware documentation requires.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I go back to Windows 11 from Bazzite?
If Windows is still installed, boot Windows, make Windows Boot Manager the default, and remove only the Bazzite partitions. If Bazzite replaced Windows, create a Windows 11 USB or use your manufacturer’s factory recovery feature and reinstall Windows.
Do I need to uninstall Bazzite before installing Windows?
No separate uninstaller is required when you are performing a clean Windows installation. Windows Setup can delete the Bazzite partitions on the target drive and create a new Windows partition layout.
Can I remove Bazzite without reinstalling Windows?
Yes, if Windows is still installed in a dual-boot setup.
Will removing Bazzite delete Windows?
It should not if you delete only confirmed Bazzite partitions. Deleting the Windows partition, Windows EFI partition, or other required Windows partitions can break or erase Windows.
Can I delete all Linux partitions in Windows Disk Management?
Only after identifying them carefully. Do not delete a partition just because Windows does not assign it a drive letter.
What filesystem does Bazzite use?
Bazzite uses Btrfs for its root filesystem, while documented manual installations also use an ext4 boot partition and an EFI System Partition.
Why does Windows Disk Management not recognize my Bazzite partition?
Windows does not natively use Btrfs and ext4 as normal Windows filesystems, so Linux partitions may appear without a usable Windows volume or drive letter.
What if Windows Boot Manager disappeared?
Boot from Windows installation media and run Startup Repair. If the Windows partition is intact but the UEFI boot files are damaged, BCDBoot can recreate the Windows boot files.
Should I delete GRUB?
You do not need to manually delete GRUB first. Make Windows Boot Manager the primary boot option, remove Bazzite safely, and leave uncertain EFI contents alone.
Can I go back to Windows on a ROG Ally after installing Bazzite?
Yes. ASUS Cloud Recovery is often the easiest option on supported ROG Ally models because it restores Windows and ASUS software. Microsoft installation media is another option.
Can I go back to Windows on a Legion Go?
Yes. Use Lenovo recovery media or Microsoft’s Windows 11 installer, then install the current Lenovo drivers, Legion Space, and firmware tools.
Will Windows activate after Bazzite?
Normally yes if the same computer previously had an activated Windows 11 license and you reinstall the matching edition.
Do I need my Windows product key?
Not always. Many computers use a digital license or a key embedded in UEFI firmware. If Setup asks for a key on a previously activated device, you can normally choose “I don’t have a product key” and allow activation after installation.
Will reinstalling Windows remove all my Bazzite files?
A clean installation that deletes the Bazzite partitions will permanently remove those files. Back up everything important first.
Can I keep my games when switching back to Windows?
Games stored on a separate Windows-compatible drive can often be reused. Games stored inside the Bazzite Linux filesystem will normally need to be backed up or reinstalled.
Can I reinstall Bazzite later?
Yes. Returning to Windows does not prevent you from installing Bazzite again later. If you do, a separate SSD is the cleanest dual-boot arrangement when your hardware supports it.
The Safest Way Back to Windows 11
If Windows still exists, preserve it. Boot Windows first, make Windows Boot Manager the default, identify the Bazzite partitions carefully, and delete only what you know belongs to Bazzite.
If Bazzite replaced Windows completely, back up your files and use official Microsoft installation media or the recovery system supplied by your device manufacturer. On gaming handhelds, factory recovery can save considerable time because it restores device-specific drivers and utilities along with Windows.
The key is not to rush the partition step. An unused Linux partition is inconvenient, but deleting the wrong Windows EFI, recovery, or data partition can turn a simple operating-system switch into a much larger recovery job.
