iPhone Touchscreen Not Working? How to Fix It

By EcollinsJuly 21, 2026Updated:July 21, 2026No Comments18 Mins Read iPhone Tips
How to fix an iPhone touchscreen that is frozen or not responding

An iPhone touchscreen can stop responding completely, ignore touches in one area, react slowly, or tap and swipe by itself. The cause may be a frozen app, moisture or debris on the glass, a poor screen protector, a faulty charger, an accessibility setting, or an iOS problem. A cracked display, swollen battery, liquid exposure, or a problem that began after screen replacement is more likely to need repair.

Start by disconnecting every Lightning or USB-C accessory, removing the case and screen protector, and wiping the display with a clean, soft cloth. If the screen still does not respond, force restart the iPhone with its physical buttons. These steps do not erase your data and match Apple’s first recommendations for a screen that responds intermittently or is overly sensitive.

Do not keep pressing a cracked or lifting display. If the screen is separating from the frame, the battery may be swollen. Turn off the iPhone if it is safe to do so, stop charging it, and arrange professional service.

Identify the Type of Touchscreen Problem

The symptom helps determine which fix is most relevant.

The Entire Screen Does Not Respond

The iPhone may be frozen, iOS may have crashed, or the display’s touch layer may have lost communication with the phone. Force restart it first.

One Part of the Screen Does Not Work

A dead strip, corner, keyboard row, or section is often associated with display damage, a failing digitizer, an incorrectly installed replacement screen, or a case pressing against the glass.

The Screen Responds Slowly

Moisture, a thick protector, extreme temperature, an overloaded app, accessibility touch settings, or a software problem can introduce delay.

The Screen Touches Itself

Unwanted taps, scrolling, typing, or app openings are commonly called ghost touch. A dirty or wet display, damaged charger, cracked screen, failing digitizer, or poor-quality replacement display can cause it.

Touch Stops Working Only While Charging

The cable, charger, wall outlet, electrical grounding, or connected accessory may be producing interference. Disconnect it and test immediately.

One App Does Not Respond

The app may be frozen even though the iPhone touchscreen works normally elsewhere. Close or update the app before resetting the entire phone.

1. Force Restart the iPhone

A force restart is the fastest way to recover when the touchscreen is completely frozen because it does not require using the display. It does not erase photos, messages, apps, or settings.

iPhone 8 and Later, Including iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd Generation

  1. Press and quickly release Volume Up.
  2. Press and quickly release Volume Down.
  3. Press and hold the Side button.
  4. Keep holding until the Apple logo appears, which may take longer than 10 seconds.
  5. Release the Side button.

Perform the first two presses quickly. Holding a volume button instead of releasing it can prevent the sequence from working.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

  1. Press and hold the Side button and Volume Down together.
  2. Continue holding until the Apple logo appears.
  3. Release both buttons.

iPhone 6s, iPhone SE 1st Generation, and Earlier

  1. Press and hold the Home button and Side or Top button together.
  2. Keep holding until the Apple logo appears.
  3. Release both buttons.

If the iPhone does not restart, connect it to a known-good charger and allow it to charge. A black screen and a frozen touchscreen are different symptoms. Follow the dedicated steps when an iPhone will not turn on or has a black screen.

2. Clean and Dry the Screen

Apple recommends keeping the screen clean and free of debris or water. Oil, lotion, sweat, rain, food residue, and dust can interfere with capacitive touch detection.

  1. Disconnect all cables.
  2. Turn off the iPhone if the screen allows it.
  3. Remove the case.
  4. Wipe the display gently with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth.
  5. Let the surface dry completely.
  6. Wash and dry your hands before testing.

Avoid:

  • Spraying cleaner directly onto the iPhone
  • Pouring alcohol or water onto the display
  • Using abrasive cloths, paper towels, or powders
  • Scraping the screen with a sharp object
  • Pushing liquid toward the speaker or charging port
  • Applying heavy pressure to cracked glass

If liquid entered the iPhone, external drying may not resolve internal corrosion. Do not charge a wet device, place it in rice, or use a hair dryer.

3. Disconnect the Charger and Other Accessories

Remove the charging cable, headphones, adapters, USB devices, and other wired accessories. Test the screen while nothing is connected.

Apple specifically recommends this step for intermittent or overly sensitive touch. If the screen works after disconnection:

  • Try another charging cable.
  • Use a different power adapter.
  • Test another wall outlet.
  • Avoid damaged or uncertified accessories.
  • Clean the charging port carefully without metal tools.
  • Stop using an accessory that makes the screen behave unpredictably.

A touchscreen that fails only during charging often points to the charger, cable, or electrical source rather than iOS. Do not ignore a charger that becomes unusually hot, sparks, buzzes, smells burnt, or has exposed wires.

Wireless charging can also generate heat. Remove the iPhone from the charger and allow it to cool before testing.

4. Remove the Case and Screen Protector

A tight case can press the edge of the display, while a thick, damaged, dirty, or misaligned protector can reduce touch sensitivity.

Remove both and test the bare screen. Check for:

  • Bubbles or moisture trapped beneath the protector
  • A cracked protector
  • Protector edges lifting from the glass
  • A case overlapping the display
  • Dirt trapped along the edges
  • A privacy protector that requires firmer or more direct contact

If the screen works normally without the accessory, replace it with one designed for the exact iPhone model. Do not keep applying extra pressure to overcome a poor protector.

5. Let the iPhone Return to a Normal Temperature

An iPhone can limit functions when it becomes too hot or too cold. Heat can also make an existing display or battery problem worse.

Move it away from:

  • Direct sunlight
  • A hot vehicle
  • Heaters
  • Heavy gaming or recording workloads
  • Thick insulating cases
  • Wireless charging during intensive use

Allow the phone to cool naturally in a dry, shaded place. Do not place it in a refrigerator or freezer because rapid temperature change can create condensation.

If the display lifts from the frame, the phone becomes unusually hot without heavy use, or the battery drains rapidly, stop charging and arrange service. A swollen battery can push against the display and create touch problems.

6. Check Whether Only One App Is Frozen

If buttons, Control Center, and other apps respond normally, the current application may be the problem.

Close an App on an iPhone With Face ID

  1. Swipe up from the bottom and pause in the middle.
  2. Find the unresponsive app.
  3. Swipe its preview upward to close it.
  4. Reopen the app.

Close an App on an iPhone With a Home Button

  1. Double-click the Home button.
  2. Find the app.
  3. Swipe its preview upward.
  4. Open it again.

Apple recommends closing an app when it is unresponsive, not routinely closing every app.

If the app continues freezing:

  • Update it through the App Store.
  • Restart the iPhone.
  • Check the developer’s service status.
  • Delete and reinstall it only after confirming its data is backed up.
  • Contact the developer.

When the same area of the screen fails in every app, suspect the display rather than one application.

7. Turn Off Touch Accommodations

Touch Accommodations changes how the iPhone interprets taps, holds, swipes, and repeated touches. An accidental or unsuitable setting can make the screen appear delayed or unresponsive.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility.
  3. Select Touch.
  4. Tap Touch Accommodations.
  5. Turn it off temporarily.

Settings such as Hold Duration and Ignore Repeat intentionally alter touch timing. Keep them enabled when needed for accessibility, but adjust their timing to match the user rather than treating the delay as a display failure.

If navigating to Settings is difficult, ask Siri to open Accessibility settings or use a connected compatible input device where available.

8. Check Guided Access

Guided Access can disable touch across the entire screen or within selected areas. This is useful for controlling access to one app, but it can look like a broken touchscreen when enabled accidentally.

To end a Guided Access session:

  1. Triple-click the Side button on a Face ID iPhone or the Home button on another model.
  2. Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or the Guided Access passcode.
  3. Tap End.

When starting Guided Access, selected screen areas can be circled and disabled. Its Session Settings can also turn Touch off completely.

Review Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access after exiting. On a managed school, business, or kiosk device, contact the administrator instead of trying to remove authorized controls.

9. Update iOS

Install the latest compatible iOS version after the screen becomes usable again.

  1. Back up important data.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi and power.
  3. Open Settings > General > Software Update.
  4. Download and install the update.
  5. Test the display before reinstalling the case or protector.

An update can fix software and compatibility problems. It cannot repair cracked glass, a failed digitizer, a loose display cable, or battery swelling.

If the touchscreen is too unreliable to update through Settings, connect the iPhone to a Mac or PC. Use Finder on a current Mac or the Apple Devices app on a current Windows PC to check for an update after creating a backup.

10. Free Up Storage Space

Very low storage can make iOS and apps behave poorly, although it does not normally cause a specific dead area on the screen.

Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and review available space. Remove unneeded downloads, large videos, offline media, and unused apps. Use Offload App when you want to remove an app while retaining its documents and data.

Restart after freeing space. If touch fails in exactly the same physical location, storage is unlikely to be the cause.

11. Test for Dead Zones

A dead zone is a section of the display that does not recognize touch.

Test it without installing an unknown diagnostic app:

  1. Open Notes or a drawing app already on the iPhone.
  2. Create a blank drawing.
  3. Draw slow horizontal and vertical lines across the entire screen.
  4. Rotate the iPhone and repeat if rotation is supported.

Gaps that repeatedly appear in the same physical area suggest a display or digitizer problem. Also test the keyboard in portrait and landscape. A missing row of keys in one orientation can correspond to a dead strip.

Take a screenshot of the test if possible. Display damage itself will not usually appear in a screenshot, but the drawn gaps can help document missing touch input.

12. Fix Ghost Touch on iPhone

Ghost touch means the iPhone registers input that you did not make. It may open apps, type characters, scroll, or press onscreen controls by itself.

Try these steps:

  1. Disconnect the charger and accessories.
  2. Clean and dry the screen.
  3. Remove the case and protector.
  4. Force restart the iPhone.
  5. Let it cool.
  6. Update iOS.
  7. Test whether the problem occurs on the Lock Screen and in different apps.

If ghost touch continues, avoid entering passwords or making payments while the phone is tapping by itself. Turn off the device if possible and arrange service.

Persistent ghost touch is commonly associated with a damaged display, digitizer failure, a loose connection, a problematic replacement screen, or pressure from a swollen battery. Software resets should not be repeated indefinitely when the physical symptoms remain.

13. Check for Physical and Liquid Damage

Inspect the phone under good lighting. Look for:

  • Cracked or chipped glass
  • Black spots, colored lines, or flickering
  • A screen lifting from the frame
  • Bent housing
  • Gaps around the display
  • Moisture inside the cameras
  • Touch failure after a drop
  • Touch failure that gets worse when the frame is held

Do not press a lifted screen back into place. A swollen battery can cause separation and presents a safety concern.

Liquid exposure can damage connectors and touch circuitry even when the display initially works. Back up the phone as soon as it is stable, stop charging it if moisture may remain, and seek inspection.

14. Check Parts and Service History

If the iPhone was repaired, inspect its available part information:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select About.
  4. Look for Parts & Service History.

The section appears only on supported models with relevant repair history. A display may be marked Genuine, Used, Unknown, or Finish Repair depending on the model, iOS version, part, and repair status.

Apple explains that display quality affects Multi-Touch response, brightness, color, True Tone, Night Shift, and Haptic Touch. A nongenuine, malfunctioning, incorrectly installed, or unfinished replacement can produce touch problems.

If Finish Repair appears, update iOS, connect to Wi-Fi, make sure the battery is sufficiently charged, and use Repair Assistant through Parts & Service History. Return to the repair provider when completion fails or the screen remains faulty.

15. Reset All Settings

Reset All Settings is a later troubleshooting step when touch works well enough to navigate and there is no clear physical damage.

  1. Back up the iPhone.
  2. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Choose Reset All Settings.
  5. Enter the passcode and confirm.

This does not delete photos, messages, or apps. It resets Wi-Fi networks, privacy permissions, location choices, keyboard settings, Apple Pay cards, and other preferences.

Do not select Erase All Content and Settings at this stage. Erasing is more disruptive and will not repair defective touch hardware.

16. Update iOS Through Recovery Mode

Recovery mode is appropriate when the iPhone remains unusable after a force restart and cannot update normally. Back up first whenever possible.

  1. Connect the iPhone to a Mac or Windows PC.
  2. Open Finder on a current Mac or Apple Devices on Windows.
  3. Put the iPhone into recovery mode using its button sequence.
  4. When the computer offers Update or Restore, choose Update first.

Update attempts to reinstall iOS without erasing the iPhone. Restore erases the device and installs iOS again.

Do not choose Restore without understanding the data-loss risk. If an Update completes but the same screen area remains dead or ghost touch continues, hardware service is more appropriate than repeated restores.

Should You Factory Reset an iPhone With a Broken Touchscreen?

A factory reset should not be an early fix. It erases the device and requires setup afterward, which may be impossible with a broken display.

Consider it only when:

  • A current backup exists
  • There is no evidence of display or battery damage
  • Touch problems began with software behavior
  • Apple Support recommends the step
  • Recovery mode Update did not help
  • You have the Apple Account credentials required for Activation Lock

A reset cannot repair cracked glass, a failed digitizer, damaged cables, liquid corrosion, or a swollen battery.

Touchscreen Not Working After Screen Replacement

Return to the service provider if the problem began immediately after repair. Possible causes include:

  • Defective replacement display
  • Damaged flex cable
  • Connector not seated properly
  • Pressure from incorrect installation
  • Nongenuine or incompatible display
  • Repair calibration not completed
  • Existing frame or logic-board damage

Document the symptoms, including dead areas, flickering, ghost touch, and whether they occur during charging. Check Parts & Service History where supported.

Avoid opening the iPhone repeatedly or pressing the display. Ask whether the repair warranty covers the issue and whether the replacement part and calibration meet the model’s requirements.

Touchscreen Works Only With Extra Pressure

An iPhone touchscreen should respond to a light touch. Needing to press hard can indicate:

  • Thick or damaged screen protector
  • Moisture or residue
  • Failing digitizer
  • Poor replacement display
  • Frame pressure or damage
  • Unsuitable Touch Accommodations settings

Remove accessories, clean the screen, and turn off Touch Accommodations for testing. Do not make forceful pressing a permanent workaround because it can worsen damage.

Touchscreen Does Not Work on the Lock Screen

Force restart first. Then clean the screen and disconnect the charger.

If Face ID unlocks the padlock but swiping up does nothing, the problem is touch input rather than facial recognition. The fixes for Face ID not working on iPhone are unnecessary unless Face ID also fails to recognize you.

If notifications or Control Center respond but one gesture does not, check accessibility settings and test other areas. A dead zone near the bottom of a Face ID iPhone can specifically prevent the swipe-up gesture.

Touchscreen Does Not Work After Water Exposure

Dry the outside with a soft cloth and disconnect all cables. Do not charge until the phone and port are dry according to Apple’s liquid-exposure guidance.

Avoid rice, heat, compressed air, cotton swabs inside ports, and inserting objects. Those methods can leave debris or push moisture deeper.

Water on the glass can cause temporary erratic touch. Continued failure after the exterior is dry can indicate internal damage and requires inspection.

Can You Control an iPhone Without Touching the Screen?

Options are limited when touch is completely unavailable, but these may help:

  • Ask Siri to call someone, open an app, or change a setting.
  • Use the physical buttons for a force restart.
  • Connect to a previously trusted computer for backup, if no onscreen approval is required.
  • Use Voice Control if it was already enabled and configured.
  • Use a compatible external input device if accessibility support was set up.

AssistiveTouch still depends on touchscreen input, so it cannot solve a completely dead display. It is more useful for broken physical buttons than for total touch failure.

When the iPhone Screen Needs Repair

Arrange service when:

  • The screen is cracked, lifting, or separating
  • A fixed area never recognizes touch
  • Ghost touch continues after cleaning and disconnection
  • Colored lines, black spots, or flickering appear
  • Touch failed after a drop or liquid exposure
  • The screen works only when pressed hard
  • Problems began after screen replacement
  • The phone becomes unusually hot or appears swollen
  • Force restart and supported software checks do not help

Back up the iPhone before service when possible. Apple or an authorized service provider can inspect the display and provide an estimate based on the model, coverage, and type of damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my iPhone touchscreen suddenly not working?

The iPhone may be frozen, the screen may be wet or dirty, an accessory may be interfering, or the display hardware may have failed. Force restart, clean and dry the screen, disconnect accessories, and remove the case and protector.

How do I restart an iPhone when the screen does not work?

On iPhone 8 and later, quickly press Volume Up, quickly press Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. Older models use different button combinations.

Why does the touchscreen stop working while charging?

A faulty cable, adapter, outlet, or electrical interference can affect touch response. Disconnect the charger and test. Replace any accessory that causes the problem.

How do I fix a dead spot on an iPhone screen?

Remove the case and protector, clean the display, restart, and update iOS. If the same physical area remains unresponsive across different apps, the digitizer or display likely needs service.

What causes ghost touch on an iPhone?

Common causes include moisture, a damaged charger, cracked glass, display pressure, digitizer failure, a loose connection, or a faulty replacement screen.

Can a screen protector make touch stop working?

Yes. A thick, damaged, dirty, or poorly fitted protector can reduce sensitivity or create erratic input. Remove it and test the bare display.

Will a factory reset fix an unresponsive screen?

It can help only with a software cause. It cannot repair display damage, a failed digitizer, liquid corrosion, or battery swelling. Use it only after backup and less destructive checks.

Can low storage make the touchscreen unresponsive?

Very low storage can slow iOS and apps, but it usually does not create a consistent dead area. Free space and restart, then test whether the physical pattern remains.

Why is my replacement iPhone screen not responding properly?

The display may be defective, incompatible, uncalibrated, connected incorrectly, or affected by frame damage. Return to the repair provider and check Parts & Service History on supported models.

How much does iPhone screen repair cost?

Cost depends on the model, country, service provider, damage, AppleCare coverage, and whether other components are affected. Obtain a current inspection and estimate rather than relying on a universal price.

The safest troubleshooting order is to force restart, clean and dry the display, disconnect every accessory, remove the case and protector, and test at a normal temperature. Update iOS and review accessibility settings only after touch returns. When the same area stays dead, ghost touch continues, or the display is cracked, lifting, or affected by liquid, protect your data and arrange service instead of repeatedly erasing the phone.
