  1. Restart the PC and check whether Wi-Fi or Ethernet returns.

  • Windows sees the adapter but has no matching driver package.
  • A driver is installed but damaged, incompatible, or unable to start.
  • Windows sees an unidentified device because supporting chipset drivers are missing.
  • Windows does not detect the network hardware at all.

Those situations require different fixes. Network reset can repair configuration, but it cannot create a driver for hardware Windows does not recognize. Similarly, repeatedly clicking Search automatically for drivers will not help an offline computer if Windows has no suitable package in its local driver store.

Check Device Manager first

Right-click Start and select Device Manager. Look in these locations:

Network adapters

Expand Network adapters. A working PC may list entries from Intel, Realtek, Qualcomm, MediaTek, Broadcom, Marvell, Killer, or another manufacturer. Ethernet devices may contain terms such as LAN, GbE, PCIe, Ethernet Controller, or Family Controller. Wireless devices may contain Wi-Fi, Wireless, WLAN, 802.11, or a wireless standard.

Ignore software-only entries such as WAN Miniport while looking for the physical adapter.

If the required adapter has a down-arrow icon, right-click it and choose Enable device. If it has a yellow warning symbol, open Properties and read the message and code under Device status.

Other devices

If the network driver is missing, the hardware may appear under Other devices as:

  • Network Controller
  • Ethernet Controller
  • Unknown device
  • PCI Device

A yellow warning symbol here commonly means Windows detects the component but cannot match it to an installed driver.

Hidden devices

In Device Manager, select View > Show hidden devices. A faded adapter may represent hardware that was previously installed but is not currently present. Do not assume a faded entry is the active network card.

Choose Action > Scan for hardware changes. If the controller appears after the scan, continue with the driver steps below.

Find the exact PC or motherboard model

The safest driver source is usually the support page for the complete laptop, prebuilt desktop, or motherboard. Manufacturers sometimes customize network hardware or package dependencies for a particular model.

Press Windows key + R, enter msinfo32, and press Enter. Record:

  • System Manufacturer
  • System Model
  • System Type
  • BaseBoard Manufacturer
  • BaseBoard Product
  • BIOS Version/Date

You can also check the service tag, serial label, purchase documentation, or BIOS information screen. Search the manufacturer’s official support site using the exact model or service tag.

For a custom-built desktop with a separate PCIe or USB network adapter, use the model printed on that adapter or its packaging. For integrated networking, use the motherboard’s support page.

Use the hardware ID when the adapter name is unknown

If Device Manager only says Network Controller, Ethernet Controller, or Unknown device, use its hardware ID to identify it.

  1. Right-click the unidentified device and select Properties.
  2. Open the Details tab.
  3. Select Hardware Ids from the Property menu.
  4. Copy or photograph the first value.

Common examples begin with:

  • PCI\VEN_ for a PCI or PCIe device
  • USB\VID_ for a USB device

The vendor and device values identify the hardware more precisely than its generic Device Manager label. Microsoft explains that Windows uses hardware IDs to match a device with a compatible driver package.

Use the ID to confirm which driver on the official PC, motherboard, or adapter support page belongs to the device. Avoid entering an unknown ID into a site that demands a driver-downloader app.

Get temporary internet access

The missing adapter driver creates an obvious problem: Windows wants an online driver, but the PC cannot get online. Use one of these temporary methods:

Connect through Ethernet

If only Wi-Fi is missing and the Ethernet adapter works, connect the PC directly to the router. Run Windows Update and download the wireless driver.

Use phone USB tethering

Connect a phone with a USB cable and enable USB tethering or Personal Hotspot according to the phone’s instructions. Windows may use the phone as a temporary network connection. Availability and carrier charges vary.

If an iPhone hotspot is unavailable, troubleshoot personal hotspot not working on iPhone before relying on it for the installation.

Use a USB Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter

Windows 11

Microsoft notes that optional drivers are not necessarily installed automatically. Review the name carefully rather than selecting every optional driver at once.

Download the correct driver from the manufacturer

Visit the official support site for Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI, Gigabyte, ASRock, Microsoft Surface, or the applicable manufacturer. Enter the exact product model or service tag and select the installed Windows version.

Look for driver categories such as:

  • Network
  • LAN
  • Ethernet
  • Wireless LAN or WLAN
  • Wi-Fi
  • Chipset

Some laptop models ship with network adapters from more than one vendor. The support page may list Intel, Realtek, Qualcomm, or MediaTek wireless drivers for the same model series. Use Device Manager’s hardware ID, the original build specification, or the manufacturer’s detection utility to select the correct one.

Check these details before downloading:

  • Exact model and hardware revision
  • Windows 10 or Windows 11
  • 64-bit or ARM64 architecture where applicable
  • Wi-Fi versus Ethernet driver
  • Adapter vendor
  • Release date and version

Most current PCs use 64-bit Windows, but an x64 driver will not work on Windows on ARM unless the package supports it.

Install the chipset driver before the network driver

On a newly installed copy of Windows, missing chipset or platform drivers can prevent correct identification of integrated devices. If Device Manager contains several unknown PCI devices, install the official chipset package first.

A sensible installation order is:

  1. Chipset or platform driver
  2. Serial IO, management engine, or system interface components listed by the manufacturer
  3. Ethernet/LAN driver
  4. Wi-Fi/WLAN driver
  5. Bluetooth driver

Restart when the installer requests it. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth may be provided by the same physical card but still use separate driver packages.

Install a downloaded driver package

Official drivers usually arrive as an .exe, .msi, or compressed .zip file.

Install an EXE or MSI package

  1. Copy the file to the affected PC.
  2. Right-click it and inspect Properties > Digital Signatures, where available.
  3. Run the installer.
  4. Follow the manufacturer’s prompts.
  5. Restart Windows.

If the installer says no compatible hardware was found, verify the PC model, adapter vendor, hardware ID, Windows architecture, and package type.

Install an INF driver manually

If the download is a ZIP archive, extract it first. Do not point Device Manager at the ZIP file itself.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the network controller and choose Update driver.
  3. Select Browse my computer for drivers.
  4. Browse to the extracted folder.
  5. Keep Include subfolders selected.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Restart the PC after installation.

If Windows still says it could not find a driver, the selected folder may not contain a compatible INF file. A similarly named package is not enough; its supported hardware IDs must match the device.

Do not force an unrelated driver with Have Disk merely because the manufacturer name looks correct. A forced mismatch can create crashes, missing features, unstable connections, or a device that will not start.

Reinstall an existing network adapter driver

Use this method when the adapter appears under Network adapters but has stopped working after an update or driver corruption.

Before uninstalling, download a replacement driver or confirm that a usable copy exists. Otherwise, an offline PC may restart without any driver to reinstall.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Right-click the affected Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter.
  4. Select Uninstall device.
  5. If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, leave it unchecked on the first attempt unless you already have the replacement package.
  6. Select Uninstall.
  7. Restart the PC.

Windows may reinstall a driver from its local store. If it does not, install the official downloaded package manually.

Roll back a driver after an update

If the network failed immediately after a driver update:

  1. Open the adapter’s Properties.
  2. Select the Driver tab.
  3. Choose Roll Back Driver, if available.
  4. Select a reason and restart.

The button is unavailable when Windows has no previous driver package to restore.

Make sure the adapter is enabled in Windows

An installed driver cannot help an adapter that is disabled.

In Device Manager, right-click the adapter. If the menu offers Enable device, select it.

Also open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings. Under Network adapters, make sure Wi-Fi or Ethernet is enabled. On some laptops, check the wireless function key, airplane-mode key, or physical wireless switch.

Disable Airplane Mode from Quick Settings. If only the Wi-Fi toggle is missing, return to Device Manager because that usually indicates a driver, disabled device, or detection problem rather than a saved-network issue.

Use Network reset only at the right time

Network reset removes and reinstalls network adapters and returns many networking components to their defaults. It can help when the correct adapter and driver are present but Windows networking remains broken.

On Windows 11, go to:

Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset > Reset now

On Windows 10, go to:

Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset

The PC will restart. You may need to reconnect to Wi-Fi, reinstall VPN software, reconfigure virtual switches, or change a network profile back to Private afterward.

Network reset is not the primary fix when Device Manager shows Code 28 or no network hardware. The matching driver must still be installed.

Business PCs, virtual-machine hosts, VPN workstations, and systems with custom IP settings may require administrator assistance before a reset.

Check the WLAN AutoConfig service for missing Wi-Fi

If the wireless adapter and driver appear healthy but Wi-Fi controls or networks are missing:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter services.msc and press Enter.
  3. Find WLAN AutoConfig.
  4. Open it and set Startup type to Automatic.
  5. Start the service if it is stopped.

This service manages wireless network discovery and connection. It does not fix a driverless or undetected adapter.

Check BIOS or UEFI settings

Integrated LAN and WLAN can be disabled in firmware. This may occur after a BIOS update, reset, repair, or configuration change.

Shut the PC down and disconnect power before touching internal components. If you are comfortable working inside the system:

  • Confirm a PCIe network card is fully seated.
  • Check that its antenna leads or external antennas are attached.
  • Try another suitable PCIe slot if the motherboard documentation permits it.
  • Inspect for obvious damage or contamination.
  • Verify that an onboard LAN controller is enabled in BIOS.

For a laptop, opening the case can damage antenna leads, battery connectors, clips, or warranty seals. Use the manufacturer’s service instructions or a qualified technician.

An inexpensive USB network adapter can also serve as a diagnostic test and temporary connection, but it does not repair the failed internal adapter.

Avoid unsafe driver-installation methods

Network-driver errors attract misleading download pages. Protect the PC by following these rules:

  • Prefer Windows Update and the PC, motherboard, or adapter manufacturer’s official site.
  • Avoid “driver updater” programs that scan the PC and demand payment.
  • Do not disable driver-signature enforcement to install an unknown package.
  • Do not use a driver intended for a different Windows architecture.
  • Do not install BIOS firmware from a third-party mirror.
  • Create a restore point before changing several low-level drivers where practical.
  • Scan transferred files with Windows Security.

A correct driver is not simply the newest file. It must support the adapter’s hardware ID and the installed operating system.

What if there is no network adapter in Device Manager?

Select View > Show hidden devices, then Action > Scan for hardware changes. Check Other devices for an unidentified network controller. Install chipset drivers and review BIOS settings.

If the adapter remains absent, consider:

  • Disabled onboard networking in BIOS/UEFI
  • A disconnected or failed internal card
  • An unsupported adapter
  • Missing chipset or bus drivers
  • A laptop wireless card disabled by a hardware switch
  • A motherboard or power problem

No driver can install onto hardware that Windows does not enumerate. At that stage, manufacturer diagnostics or physical service is more useful than repeated network resets.

What if Ethernet works but Wi-Fi is missing?

The Ethernet and wireless controllers use separate drivers. Use Ethernet to run Windows Update and download the WLAN driver for the exact PC model. Also install the companion Bluetooth driver if the laptop’s Wi-Fi card provides Bluetooth.
